A friend made an offhand comment about trans anarchist gremlins and that fit a pair of characters from my project well enough, so, doodle. Wizards instead of gremlins, but ehh. The short one's afflicted by an immortality curse and is doing his best :')

Somewhere in my notes there's something like, "With all the magic and monsters people have to deal with, they've found things other than racism and sexism to be awful about." Half of it wound up being accidental allegory anyway, but c'est la too much shonen anime and JRPGs.

Her family scattered after gaining the reputation of a dangerous cult, and the shell of the maligned god attached himself to her during the fallout. So now she's accidentally become the center/leader of a gaggle of oddballs trying to figure out what to do with themselves and a dead god.

MC is from an affluent family of archivists. While not everything in their records is factually accurate, their most important piece of lore pertained to their god of death, claiming he was originally a god of cycles and fate, but lost any notion of benevolence over the years.

People of more mundane means, mostly wealth, also get some of this scrutiny, but less so than individual-what-can-punch-through-steel folks, since capitalism is abstract and not an immediate threat akin to someone walking around with a knife or gun or thought-powered flamethrower.

There's a lot of regulations involving mage and adventurer-types to the point that it can get a lil second-class-flavored, like they're not allowed any political involvement, they might be heavily monitored, people may get awkward if they know you're "one of them."

I'm still in a sort of "don't make it until you need it" state right now, but since a lot of the setting mirrors places I've been, the main country/city is stuck in "we totally don't have classes" but then you look at the QoL disparity and squint.

I was a very lonely teenager and life has not been kind :')

My main motivation is that I told myself I wanted to eventually make something that could help even one person feel less alone. I found comfort in media, and loved the things where you could clearly see parts of the author coming through, and I wanted to be on that side of things at some point.

I'd always loved drawing and entertaining people, and when I was in school, I was the kid that wound up friends with the librarians. My brain's a little soupy lately because of some health kerfuffles, but I'm still very driven to make things.

When I was 11, it finally clicked that anyone could just make stuff, and little me just started and never stopped. Never had a fanfiction phase, and what I'm working on now is a blend of everything I'd liked from previous things I'd made, all the way back to childhood.

I am cursed with funny and sometimes just sitting around making "what if" jokes turns into something actually real neat :')

Doing this instead of using communication-based magic is all a big dumb metaphor for her solving problems for people but never engaging more than surface level with the people she helps.

It's a vehicle for character growth or something.

She can kinda do whatever she wants as long as she doesn't strain her connection to her dead god buddy and it falls within his domain.

So any "accepted" definition of a word works to get magic to work, including slang, so there's a bunch of prescriptivist wizards that get all "back in myyyy daaaay" about slang magic.

But "cheating" and using connections and creativity instead of communication has MC in a weird, unique position.

(Creative means lazy in this case.)

And being too jumpy to focus on meanings of words to use magic is like a whole pretentious plot point because I make good decisions.

Logomancy in the setting works almost like entering a command into reality's console, so intent and understanding is important.

Being attached at the metaphorical hip to what used to be a god helps my MC with both fighting and "creative" problem solving. Using magic through that attachment works for her better than normal magic, as it's all logomancy and she's too scatterbrained to focus on meanings.

One of the group has political connections to keep things less legally precarious for them, but he's frequently at odds with other members, so there's inter-party danger there.

The setting-equivalent of Satan also isn't supposed to exist and has a sort of cosmic antibody after him :V

There's so much. The main crew is collectively wanted for a ton of reasons, the world outside of cities and towns is full of monsters, there's heavy regulation on magic-users, and the protag hangs out with the setting equivalent of Satan (though Lucifer might be more accurate).

People within the frequency range are able to find the rift's source and close it, and the longer someone spends dealing with rifts, the wider their frequency range gets, which has some lingering side effects, but also has created an entire career option. Normal people don't become adventurers.

On the spectrum of mundane to arcane, the rifts have a particular frequency of sorts, and anyone outside that frequency is likely to feel effects from being near it, but have no idea what's going on. They can cause things like nausea, headaches, hallucinations, and worse.

On top of typical fantasy fare of monsters and undead, the harsh divide between magical and physical reality causes space to sort of bleed or tear in some places. These rifts grow in size and instability, but only a handful of people "tuned" to them can interact with them.

I don't have any specifics for locations yet, but I used to travel and hike a lot, and always ramble about some of the places I love, so I've got a stash of photos to reference. Malls, hotels, canyons, woods, all sorts of things. Palo Duro Canyon in particular'll be a huge source of inspiration.

Elie insists she the scion of a dragon, even though they've been extinct long enough they're similar to irl dinosaurs. Her claws, scales, and skill with magic made her younger self a very extroverted dork, and being bullied by her peers at school definitely didn't affect her adult personality. Nope.
