Today is the first day of Ramadan, the first day of Adar, Lunar New Year and Mardi Gras.
This means that for one reason or another, the majority of humans on the planet have a reason to eat fried food, and that is beautiful.
This year I am making myself a semlor-inspired birthday cake at the weekend - Samin Nosrat’s almond cardamom cake, which I will torte and fill with whipped cream!

Pipe on some whipped cream, put the lid back on, dust with powdered sugar. DELICIOUS. ScandiKitchen has them, highly recommend if you can get there!

I will be making pancakes for dinner tonight (American, diner-style), and I usually make Swedish semlor but am skipping it this year for various reasons. Here’s a pic from 2023, when Fat Tuesday was also my birthday!

The problem with making marbled red and pink cake for Valentine’s Day shenanigans is that the batter looks disconcertingly meaty.

I'm not joking. The only reason that's not the statutory sentence is that US torture laws only apply to torture committed OUTSIDE the US; torture committed INSIDE the US isn't a separate crime

MAHA: Eating a giant steak cooked in butter alongside beef tallow fries and washing it down with coffee spiked with butter
Not MAHA: Clean air, clean water, health insurance, vaccines, disease monitoring, scientific research, food assistance, food safety, bike lanes

12.02.2026 23:29 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0What’s funny about Late Capitalism vs. OG Capitalism is that they’re not just different things but, in many ways, opposites. Take “too big to fail,” for example. Capitalism is based on failure! In feudalism the lords couldn’t fail, so they made a system where bad things collapsed and were replaced.
