The river Gauja in Latvia, with heavily wooded banks and a seemingly glassy complexion, which is a mere illusion, as the flow is fast.

The Gauja river is quite high for this time of year due to all the rain we’ve had. I’ve done this hike many times over the last few years, in nearly all the seasons and it never fails to move me.

Ooph, Trout Mask is one of my faves, and I’d happily listen to everything else, except Zappa…

Normal service will resume in August with new music from the Baltics and further afield.

He had one memorable song, which anyone who remembers it is now desperately struggling to forget.

It did make some cute noises though. I need some new equipment for non-tent camping, but there aren’t many months you can really do it here or places you won’t be bothered by ticks or mozzies. Sleeping under the stars is a glorious thing though, even if there is a close amphibian encounter.

Woke up at 3am with a frog on my face. It didn’t seem too bothered about it.

They are more accessible for smaller musicians, but that is just a population situation. Scandinavian countries have big advantage there.
But in terms of playing Europe is small sometimes. And whilst you can get a fee/sleeping place/ food in most places, it’s not like you can do the rounds for ever

It depends on where you live. In America you have Geography on your side, in Europe you have government funding for the arts which, depending on the country, can and will support experimental musicians.

Last weekend was Pride in Rīga, a month of events finishing in 8,000 people taking to the streets and some awesome parties through to sometime the next afternoon…
The protestors were the same twelve bland, fools dressed in beige with placards as tired as their message. Here’s to another year!

Some nice touches though, like the Arnie dollars.

Just seems a lot to me. When a franchise starts overfilling a film with new things it tends to be a warning sign to me.
I’m sure it’ll be interesting though and I am looking forward to it.

Seems to be a lot going on in that trailer. For me, the best Alien films are geographically limited and this is certainly not that.

But it was more about the art on the inside.

Yesterday was the start of the Process festival in Rīga, run by the Baltic Analog lab, it is a love letter to analog film, showcasing people who go through the BAL workshops and international guests. Next door Aiden Baker’s new band Tavare played, which I managed to catch. Spring in Rīga is busy!
