According to Harvard, reports of an impending $500 million payment to the Trump administration are fake news from the White House. That would fit with the type of maximum pressure campaign that they are trying to run.

3 genius women with paradigm-shifting intellects, leadership, and character who we lost:

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen gave us the Biden economy

Lina Khan at FTC fought Big Tech

Jen Easterly of Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. (We likely won't know her wins until years later.)

The US could see a 30-40% decline in new international student enrollment, resulting in nearly $7 billion in lost revenue and more than 60,000 fewer American jobs. https://www.nafsa.org/fall-2025-international-student-enrollment-outlook-and-economic-impact

This is true! Conservatives almost always start their attacks on freedom with children or young adults. Because kids have so few rights, they can normalize the loss of even more rights.

It’s one of the big reasons why paying attention to what is happening to schools is important for all of us.

Never ever did it occurred to me, while raising two kids, to want to know where they were at all times. Maybe a legacy of being a 1970s latchkey kid, and having so much freedom.

"Ziplines is renting the brand equity of regionalized public higher education in the aggregate" but "the evolution of education which companies like Ziplines imagine is not one of mutual flourishing with their university partners, but one in which those partners can be retired and replaced."

Cuts to Data Collection May Erode Reliability of Economic Statistics

Powell stressed today that the Fed's decisions will be based on how the economic data performs in coming months.
One problem: That data may be becoming less reliable.

As US population growth slows, we need to reset expectations for economic data.

Payrolls, GDP, expenditures, and income will all grow more slowly now that the immigration surge has ended. That changes how we interpret ... everything.

Faculty Support of George Mason’s President Draws Federal Investigation

This is actually a significant & frightening step in the fascist flex.

If you support someone targeted by Trump the DOJ will turn its investigatory muscle against you.

And non-Swedish-speakers (who were also more likely to work in care homes) were less likely to get the message about social distancing, so they died at higher rates.

Meanwhile, political scientists who focus on European politics and who are also public health experts (folks like me, Scott Greer, a few others) were talking and writing about the Swedish experience starting in March of 2020, and had a much more nuanced view. Sigh.
