What do we want from Black women on screen? From Teyana Taylor’s Oscar-nominated turn in One Battle After Another to Industry’s ruthless Harper Stern, Black women are taking on some of the most morally complex roles on screen. But what does “go...

For EE72, I wrote about representation of black women on screen, even when it's messy as hell and why mess is culturally necessary:

they're executing moms and nurses in the street. they're using preschoolers as bait. they're stealing people's dads and grandmas and children. they're tear gassing babies. they're staking out schools. there is no remedy but abolition. any proposal that doesn't start there is an act of violence.

It also feels like some are more shocked at 'good' middle class people being killed than they were at black and brown people who may not have been saints killed by law enforcement. As though now the U.S is acting immorally as opposed to the last 250 years that have led to this point.

but doing this so brazenly and there being little consequence from the government is what people were protesting against. By arguing against that, you legitimise a system that can execute members of the public from all walks of life. That is why solidarity has always mattered.

With the tragic shootings in Minnesota, I can't help but think that people really missed the point of defunding the police and the BLM protests in 2020 and before that. Because law enforcement killing people is not new.

At the end of the day, the Black Lives Matter era was about whether people should be killed in the street, and lots of people decided yeah and put those little blue flags on their cars. It spread to everyone because it stopped for no one.

Fascinated to know where the ‘no it’s not Fascism’ crowd stand after the last two weeks, with the kidnap of Liam Ramos, the murder of Renee Good and now Alex Pretti, a 37 yr old ICU nurse who worked with veterans.

He was shot nine times while helping a woman who had been pepper sprayed.

Nine.

I would love it if Robert Jenrick found himself without a party, I realise it's 2026 and good things keep happening to bad people but I would love it if he'd just fucked it

Again, a party that doesn't want to be a new Tory party, they sure have a lot of Tories.

Am I anxious about the mainstreaming of white nationalism and esotericism? Yep, definitely. Do I feel like I'm a good writer or journalist? Not at the moment.

Will Tom and Jerry fix this? Yep.

I'm having my end of year existential crisis and really have some dark thoughts about myself, my career, the world so I sort of just started watching Tom and Jerry.
