Hey #EduSky #WomenInSTEM folks, am after recommendations to further investigate...
Who (academic/school/educator) do you know that has the best/really cool initiatives for increasing the number of girls electing to study computing (IT/CS) at a post-compulsory level? (Must be outside of Australia)

Young ppl are not fkn around this election. We want a habitable earth for now and the future. We want an end to our complicity in other nations war crimes, we want an end to the unspoken aparthied and continued genocide of Indigenous ppls in so called Australia. We want to end the duopoly.

How it tries to manufacture and control the news, instead of simply reporting it. How it mixes facts with opinions to manipulate the truth. How it stays silent on the biggest global issues and instead feeds us stories on petty crime and celebrity gossip. This is a reminder that there is a lot of GOOD QUALITY INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM IN AUSTRALIA, if you know where to look. A5: I try to give back as much as I can, and share cool stuff that I find so others can see it too. I've definitely benefited from others too, so it's a balance.
#EduSkyAU
agree with the quality over quantity!
But yeah *shakes fist at algorithms*
A4: For DigiTech it's Kings College London, CAS, and the Raspberry Pi foundation that have such fantastic resourses and insights. Learned so much from them. Also generally speaking @philosophyteach.bsky.social for his approach to rich discussions. Made me see things in a different light.
#EduSkyAU
A3: That's a great question, I guess it's sharing ideas and inspiration and trying stuff and feeding back how to make them better. Respectfully challenging things. Sharing wins, supporting failures, building each other up. Teaching is too hard to do alone, we need to work collaboratively.
#EduSkyAU
A2: Remembering! Yes, setting alarm would have been useful for this one (Mr 10 swimming lessons at the same time)
Also cutting out all the irrelevant STEM bandwagon noise, and also rubbish from people that think DT is what ICT was renamed to. Twitter used to be good, BSky is getting there!
#EduSkyAU
A1: It made such a huge difference, starting in Primary and being the only DT teacher in the school, I relied on my online PLN to keep myself sane and reassured I was on the right track. Also the CSER community too from their MOOCs.

BBC just released damning research on AI assistants' news accuracy.
Results: 51% of AI responses had significant issues. 19% introduced errors when citing BBC. 13% misquoted or made up BBC content entirely. π€π€

A5: I tell them to approach things with the confidence of a mediocre white man :D
But seriously, they do need more encouragement though. I try to build them up, tell them they're good at stuff. Eventually they start believing me! #EduSkyAU
This was a list of factors that affected enrolment in elective computing subjects at Y9 & Y10 level. I think most of them have been mentioned in this chat! #EduStemAU
11.02.2025 10:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There's definitely still some closely held beliefs in families of gendered careers. This is changing but quite slowly.
There's a great edu/awareness campaign in the UK, think of a Nurse, is it a male? Think of a Mechanic, is it a female? Think of a Project Manager, is it a male, etc. #EduSkyAU
Choose topics that would interest girls in subject selection in Years 9/10. Often the boys will choose it anyway without reading the descriptions. By getting more girls at Y9/10 level you have more chance of some staying on. Friends choosing subjects also influences choice. #EduSkyAU
11.02.2025 10:11 β π 6 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Why do we need to prepare girls, we need to prepare the businesses! Allocate them mentors in industry who will help them navigate a path. Build their confidence so they know their worth and can advocate for themselves #EduSkyAU
11.02.2025 10:01 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1Confidence is such a major factor. Girls in high school won't try something unless they know they will succeed. Also belonging. Make spaces neutral where girls can feel like they belong. And encouragement. Range of contexts, boys like to tinker, girls like to improve society.
