My dogs have access to window views. My oldest is in a less safe crate because she is claustrophobic. However, if I drove in high traffic areas, I would rethink that decision.
Also, once they are used to crates, they feel very odd riding loose.

Even better is a crash tested crate. It keeps them safe and it is nice to not have dog drool on your food.
My last loose dog was over 9 years ago.
