Today is DC Emancipation Day, a day that commemorates the abolition slavery in DC. It is also a day that celebrates the courage and struggle of individuals who have fought for freedom, and how this work is still needed now.

163 years ago, President Lincoln signed the DC Compensated Emancipation Act.
The Act abolished slavery in the District and freed 3,100 enslaved DC residents.
Each year — like generations of DC residents before us — we celebrate Emancipation Day and the ideals of freedom and equality it represents.
