Also, reframe "leading with conclusions" to "bottom line up front" or BLUF. With BLUF they know what you proposal is about first, then dive into the evidence and feasibility.

A century of Black History Month In 1926, alum Carter G. Woodson launched annual commemoration; learn about this year’s events at UChicago

Woodson wrote in 1927. β€œWe should emphasize not Negro History, but the Negro in history. What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race, hatred and religious prejudice.”

Ha, ha, ha.

One thing I do not like is the embedded idea that contributions to science are captured in 5-10 publications. Some contributions build over years and multiple papers…sometimes more than 5.

There is always the Clandinin rule: Estimate the time, double the number, and increase the unit by one notch. 1 day = 2 weeks. Does that help?

A collaborator of my PhD advisor asked me why he insisted on training women, since they would all leave to have children. I did not have kids at that time, but told him I hope he was better at knowing his audience when giving seminars and walked away.

At an evening event/dinner-talk with students, the other faculty presenter said β€œI know you have small kids, would you like to speak first so you can get home to them.” Students were shocked by this line which simultaneously undermined me as a scientist & mother.
