i ordered a miniature orchid for my birthday and the company says they ship out on mondays or tuesdays and it’s tuesday so i better see that shipping notification in my emails TODAY 🫵

vanilla orchid cultivation is so involved and labour intensive that i don’t really care to even TRY and get vanilla beans, just having it as a novelty is fun. These guys bloom for only 24 hours and up until the plant is approx. 8 years old, and have to be hand pollinated

thank you local nursery thay gets plants from a former employee in coffs harbour otherwise i would never have seen this vanilla orchid (something i’ve been fantasising about for weeks). So excited to get this in some orchid bark and growing 😭

this baby also popped a new trap and has another on the way - N. Rowaniae

:) 11 days later, the first pitcher has opened. It has some great colouration, a little striping, and some mottling on the inside of the trap. When Nepenthes are young they often have “hairy” trap lids like this little Truncata

i forget how many i have until i decide to give them a bath (this isn’t all of them)

this is the whole planter. I’m rebuilding my sarracenia collection after my last one was killed in a freak dog pee accident

the sarracenias (north american pitcher plants) are looking good! I suspect they’ll really show off in autumn. these guys LOVE sun so i grow them in a hanging balcony planter. I’ve always had good success growing them this way!

for reference, the species/hybrids:

-(Boschiana x veitchii) x Boschiana (no doubt the breeder included veitchii to give it some colour)
-Rowaniae
-Truncata (red variety)
-Ventricosa

the baby nepenthes box is doing well enough after the seedlings adjusted to their new environment, they all have new pitchers forming, it’s been a bit of trial and error with their grow light as it was stronger than i initially thought

oh my god i remembered that my aunt is holding onto some huge 30+ year old orchids for me….. if i had a bigger fucking apartment………
