🚨 £4.8bn in disability social security cuts — AND the govt ruled out input on the most damaging policies.
They're breaking their own rules by shutting out people with disabilities from decisions that will directly affect their lives.
An absolute sham.

🚨 MPs are being asked to vote on disability social security cuts without knowing the full impact.
This is a political choice. It’s cost-cutting at the expense of people with disabilities.
Reckless and cruel.

This is a screenshot of Abbink (2024): “Example 1: #TigrayGenocide” taken from page 11 of https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/7kx6c]
For everything in Tigray, Abbink uses a single investigation (JIT 2021) conducted in the presence of govt handlers and soldiers, during a time when the people being interviewed lived under military occupation by the alleged perpetrators, before the conflict was even halfway over.

This is a screenshot of Abbink (2024): “Example 1: #TigrayGenocide” taken from page 11 of https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/7kx6c]
Abbink, on the other hand casually dismisses the genocide in Tigray by repeating a well-worn argument based on a handful of posts on the first night of the war. We agree that these posts were, at best, premature. After a mountain of evidence, the point becomes moot.

This lists the report’s contributors, see page 7-8 of: https://newlinesinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/20240604-Report-Genocide-in-Tigray-NLISAP_y.pdf
The contributors to the report were legal and human rights experts with decades of experience. They based their analysis on publicly available evidence. They did not get their information from social media and are eminently more qualified than Abbink to issue this opinion.

On the left is the cover page of a report by the New Lines Institute (linked) called “Genocide in Tigray: Serious Breaches of International Law in the Tigray Conflict, Ethiopia, and Paths to Accountability” On the right is the report’s executive summary. I have highlighted a sentence that reads: “This report concludes that, on the evidence currently available, there is a reasonable basis to believe that members of the ENDF, ASF, and the EDF have committed genocide against Tigrayans.”
Genocide
Facts first. This is a comprehensive analysis by the @newlinesinst.bsky.social, which found “reasonable basis to believe that members of the ENDF, ASF, and the EDF have committed genocide against Tigrayans.”

If the genocide, weaponized starvation, systematic sexual violence, and civilian massacres actually happened, then you would expect social media activity surrounding these topics. Abbink says they didn’t happen. Let’s examine his claims...
/6
I have an alternative theory: There was no global conspiracy. These atrocities actually happened. The people who Abbink calls “Pro-TPLF activists” were the families of the victims who were trying to get the world to notice that their people were being slaughtered.
/5
Text from Abbink 2024. I have highlighted: “Despite the shaky and biased approach in the messaging, it had an inordinate impact on global media and policy-makers in the West (the ‘donor countries’), influenced by its misinformation and incorrect memes – thus delaying a solution for the armed conflict (cf. Abbink 2021a and 2021b). This impact was especially pertinent on the side of the pro-TPLF activists and their supporters in the global media, as activist social media messaging contributed to create a narrative frame in the global press and policy circles whereby the TPLF and Tigray Region and its people were ‘the underdog’ and at the receiving end of all the HR abuses.
First, Abbink’s theory. At the root of the so-called “disinformation,” Abbink imagines a global conspiracy promulgated by partisans of Tigray’s regional political party, the TPLF. He marvels at the reach of this conspiracy and blames it for the length of the war.
/4
Section in Abbink’s “Contestation vs. conciliation: Social media political rhetoric fuelling the Ethiopia war, 2020-2022” called “Social media memes relating to the Ethiopia conflict impacting on global media reporting and political decision-makers.”
Abbink examines what he calls “social media memes,” which include the worst imaginable atrocities: genocide, forced starvation, systematic sexual violence, civilian massacres.
Sadly, none of this was “generated by social media accounts.” It all happened.
