Gallen-Kallela painted The Island of the Blessed during a period when he was deeply engaged with Symbolism and spiritual subject matter. The work does not illustrate a specific episode from the Kalevala and is not tied to a known literary source. Instead, it reflects a broader European Symbolist interest in metaphysical themes, idealized realms, and inward contemplation, which characterized much of his work around the turn of the twentieth century.

By 1902, Gallen-Kallela had already established himself as a central figure in Finnish art. He began his career with realist and naturalist subjects in the 1880s, transitioned toward Symbolism in the 1890s, and later became widely known for monumental decorative projects and works connected to Finnish epic and national culture. At the time this painting was made, Finland remained a Grand Duchy under Russian rule, and questions of national identity and cultural independence were actively debated. While Gallen-Kallela played a major role in shaping visual expressions of Finnish culture, The Island of the Blessed is best understood as a personal and symbolic vision rather than an explicitly national or political statement.

The painting belongs to a phase in which Gallen-Kallela explored spiritual ideals, imagined landscapes, and timeless settings, aligning his work with international Symbolist currents while maintaining a distinct personal style.
