And one other thing: we’re being told that AI is the only way to make games cheaper and faster, to pull us from this precipice of production nightmares the industry has found itself in. That it’s necessary.
We put out roughly 3 motherfucking games a year, not touching the stuff.
Skill issue.
The people who will most profit from this quality and connection-sapping technology being assumed to be inevitable, want you to give up on pushing against it today, by believing that fight is already over.
Don’t give in.
Don’t be fooled.
Don’t accept the thing already making our medium worse.
Is pressure increasing? Absolutely. Are investors and management pushing to “just try it”, hoping issues with the tech will resolve itself, and that developers and audiences will gradually get worn down and just accept it slipping into more and more of the work? For sure.
But it’s not there yet.
We don’t use generative AI at Strange Scaffold and I can confirm that a *lot* of other studios are not—whether indie or AAA.

I’ve said this before, but I feel the easiest societal norm to connect to genAI, is social norms around plagiarism and copying in various professions.
Getting caught using genAI in one’s work, should carry the same social consequences as getting caught plagiarizing or wholesale copying others' work
Recently listened to a DnD comedy podcast, where a guest joined the game, as the players are infiltrating a cult, and the guest’s character is a young cultist, who just has the most toxic “over-achiever teen” vibes, but for evil cult activities

Much of the hand wringing, imo, is over a critic explicitly saying they are judging the moral fabric of a piece of art because of the tools used to create it and it’s making some folks feel uncomfortable and shamed. The people who feel that way should sit with that feeling.
