So… I've been writing for about 18 years on the idea that if you somehow manage to make meaningfully conscious machine minds & then you treat them as tools, then you're enslaving those minds, and that's pretty messed up. And this ties into something else I've re-upped recently: LLMs can't say "No."

Seeing ppl circulate projects whose NEH grants were canceled by DOGE reaffirms my argument about AI as a permission structure. Some grants were canceled w/o a “no” from the generated summary. DOGE had a mandate to slash humanities funding & AI gave them the veneer of a rationale for their actions.

A post on X from the betting platform Polymarket that says “BREAKING: Anthropic CEO says Claude may or may not have gained consciousness, as the model has begun showing symptoms of anxiety.”

Literally as I’m arguing with someone about whether AI companies are misleading people into believing their technology possesses God-like super-intelligence I see this monstrosity

FYI: social science research is different from crunching numbers on questions that have already been answered. It is about learning FROM YOUR SUBJECTS what other questions you *should* be asking and haven’t yet, and then following that deeper in.

AI ain’t it.

Outing yourself as incapable of original human thought is really quite something brave to do.

This completely misunderstands the research process including the point of doing literature reviews. Claude’s “analysis” treats research as paint by numbers regurgitation of pre-existing work.

Kustov & folks who share these views need to give up their jobs in favor of those who want to research.

I’m really happy for ex-Tory aid James Price that he has such a nice relationship with his American mother-in-law…

but frankly I don’t think that’s enough for us to be unquestioningly following Donald Trump’s America into another illegal war🤷‍♀️
