just saw Herbie Hancock at the Strathmore. played almost exclusively progressive jazz, went ~1 hour over time, much of the overage stemming from a nearly 40m lecture on evolution, compassion, & futurism done entirely via vocoder, and saved almost all the accessible fusion for post-lecture. the GOAT!

Absolutely, the gov'ts we have don't help, though they could, and the poor will always, existentially, pay the price, and they should, absolutely, not have to pay for the organized abandonment of society by the rich. (That was a lot of 'absolutely'.)

But what's the reason for these tons of crimes? Perhaps the money that's spent on policing could be spent on education, increasing wages to a livable amount, social programmes, housing, and all of the material conditions that help people so they don't have to turn to crime to get by.

There's only one way to get more cops in 'needed areas' and it's by yet again boosting the budget. They'll not re-deploy them from 'idle areas' because there never are any, to them. The social construct of crime's rates in #hamont have also been dropping over time, so justification's not there.

I have family and friends in the U.S. and while your characterization may be true in some places it's certainly not the case everywhere.

I don't understand this 'wait until we see the budget' talk from their side. Haven't they seen enough of what Carney's intimating? Why do they need the fine print? Tuesday's vote on the federal budget's going to be a real litmus test for the New Democrats, I think. Will it be people or profit?

We've been here before. Unless this results in genuine compassion for others on their terms, it profits nothing and none.

Canadians rejected this approach in 2015 but social conditions continued to decline under Justin Trudeau, making it easy for Poilievre to resurrect it. The gap between the rich and poor has exploded to historic highs, triggering a new and worrisome public face of desperation: that which politicians would call crime. And yet, if we’ve never actually been safer before (unless we’re a Shopper’s Drug Mart’s baby food section), why are our politicians hiring more and more cops and changing our bail laws? If crime is not up, what is with all this spending on so-called crime-fighting measures? The answer is easy: expanding the security state is necessary if the rich are going to keep making the money they are making. They are talking about security not for the people, but of profits. We cannot be allowed to riot. We cannot be allowed to smash the windows of the Royal Bank or Loblaw’s. They know that that’s what comes next and they’re heading us off at the pass … and way too many Canadians are thanking them for their wisdom in doing so.

Increase the time they have to deal with arrears.

Extend the period of time tenants have to request reviews of LTB decisions.

Obligate landlords to compensate tenants for own-use evictions.
