The movement in the north east doesn't get the attention it should. They might not have won the seats but they did interesting and valuable work

Thank you to @conteurohistory.bsky.social for publishing this piece on international solidarity between German and Scottish agricultural workers during the Kapp Putsch.

In that way I suppose Orange Book Lib Dems should immediately gain from that demographic. However, I think it's more likely there'll be a protracted death and membership bleed from the Conservative party over the next decade

The biggest question is what will happen to One Nation Conservativism. Already the Thatcherite tradition has seemingly been taken on by Reform, in the same way Labour absorbed Radical Liberalism.

Unity from Below? The Impact of the Spanish Civil War on Labour and the Left in Aberdeen and Dundee, 1936-1939 | Labour History Review This article examines the impact of the Spanish Civil War on the political left in Britain via a study of the response engendered by the conflict in Aberdeen and Dundee. The Spanish Civil War united the British left in sympathy with the Republican ...

I'd recommend this as well, although it's more academic.

Tbf I'm a bit hyper-aware of it after being in Falkirk so could have picked folk up wrong. Still no place for the far right at pittodrie

Biggest concern was bits of the crowd chanting 'send them home'. Petered out quick enough mind

Aye second half was crying out for Pape's chaos. Lb is a major weakness, we'll see how gyamfi gets on once fit.

I think the first half hour or so we saw what this Aberdeen side could grow into. They looked great both on and off the ball but we definitely need a proper no. 9

I will clarify though, the accusations were utilised against Cowan's support of free trade as opposed to anything else

18.07.2025 14:22 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

To make this go full circle, Cowan was actually accused by Unionists of being a foreign agent during the 1910 general elections.

His election campaign in 2022 and his attachment to a retrenched British nationalism makes this unsurprising. It will make Renfrew a big target for reform next year with politics still very localised there

Last week, Scotland’s three islands councils – Orkney Islands Council, Shetland Islands Council and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar - turned 50. How did they come to be established, and how have they changed the governance landscape of Scotland’s islands? A short thread of findings from my PhD thesis.

I can't comment on the fishing as that wasn't mentioned β€” other than smoked fish traditionally being a staple protein source.

Cattle grazing is stationary. Although I should add that beef production was very much a product of modernity in Japan β€” pre 19th c. meat consumption was taboo and not done.

Visiting Hida Folk village illustrated some interesting parallel experiences between Northern Scotland and Hilda, Japan. Both, as low grain producing areas, found specialisation in textiles and beef production allowing for the continued existence of a peasant class into the 20th century

I don't know who's responsible for the Junge Welt stickers in Falkirk but I'd appreciate some context

Point three makes an interesting counterpoint to the recent changes in inheritance tax. The 1918 manifesto is much more direct in addressing land justice as opposed to the blunt monetary rises implemented by Reeves.

It is also very much a manifesto built on compromise β€” accommodating Georgists, cofting interests, Marxists and modernisers.

Perhaps unsurprisingly you can pick out strands that later governments would adopt and implement, i.e. twenty first century community buyouts resembles point 11

The land policy of the Scottish executive of the labour party in 1918 makes interesting reading β€” particularly in terms of its scope and scale.
