Doing a PhD on labour in 20th C. rural Scotland
In that way I suppose Orange Book Lib Dems should immediately gain from that demographic. However, I think it's more likely there'll be a protracted death and membership bleed from the Conservative party over the next decade
19.09.2025 09:32 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The biggest question is what will happen to One Nation Conservativism. Already the Thatcherite tradition has seemingly been taken on by Reform, in the same way Labour absorbed Radical Liberalism.

STUC statement on standing alongside the people of Falkirk against racism ๐
@sutrscotland.bsky.social
Tbf I'm a bit hyper-aware of it after being in Falkirk so could have picked folk up wrong. Still no place for the far right at pittodrie
21.08.2025 22:00 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Biggest concern was bits of the crowd chanting 'send them home'. Petered out quick enough mind
21.08.2025 21:53 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Aye second half was crying out for Pape's chaos. Lb is a major weakness, we'll see how gyamfi gets on once fit.
21.08.2025 21:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I think the first half hour or so we saw what this Aberdeen side could grow into. They looked great both on and off the ball but we definitely need a proper no. 9
21.08.2025 21:40 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I will clarify though, the accusations were utilised against Cowan's support of free trade as opposed to anything else
18.07.2025 14:22 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0To make this go full circle, Cowan was actually accused by Unionists of being a foreign agent during the 1910 general elections.
18.07.2025 14:20 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0His election campaign in 2022 and his attachment to a retrenched British nationalism makes this unsurprising. It will make Renfrew a big target for reform next year with politics still very localised there
02.06.2025 15:07 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1Last week, Scotlandโs three islands councils โ Orkney Islands Council, Shetland Islands Council and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar - turned 50. How did they come to be established, and how have they changed the governance landscape of Scotlandโs islands? A short thread of findings from my PhD thesis.
19.05.2025 19:49 โ ๐ 34 ๐ 10 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 5Can't even avoid this in the archives
28.03.2025 09:47 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I can't comment on the fishing as that wasn't mentioned โ other than smoked fish traditionally being a staple protein source.
Cattle grazing is stationary. Although I should add that beef production was very much a product of modernity in Japan โ pre 19th c. meat consumption was taboo and not done.
Visiting Hida Folk village illustrated some interesting parallel experiences between Northern Scotland and Hilda, Japan. Both, as low grain producing areas, found specialisation in textiles and beef production allowing for the continued existence of a peasant class into the 20th century
13.01.2025 10:56 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I don't know who's responsible for the Junge Welt stickers in Falkirk but I'd appreciate some context
18.12.2024 10:15 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Point three makes an interesting counterpoint to the recent changes in inheritance tax. The 1918 manifesto is much more direct in addressing land justice as opposed to the blunt monetary rises implemented by Reeves.
06.12.2024 14:21 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It is also very much a manifesto built on compromise โ accommodating Georgists, cofting interests, Marxists and modernisers.
Perhaps unsurprisingly you can pick out strands that later governments would adopt and implement, i.e. twenty first century community buyouts resembles point 11
The land policy of the Scottish executive of the labour party in 1918 makes interesting reading โ particularly in terms of its scope and scale.
06.12.2024 14:10 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0There's a strong argument for the Labour History Archive being the most fun to visit

The Landworkers Alliance are absolutely sound and probably the best source on anything rural in the UK.
24.11.2024 09:53 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0That said the issues of land becoming more concentrated and lack of security for tenant farmers were already issues independent of the inheritance tax rise
24.11.2024 09:49 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The Landworkers Alliance is about the only nuanced response I've read which deals with this.

The idealogical/side has been really interesting to get into. Early days but I'm hoping to get a paper out of it.
