It'd be super cool if Congress stepped up and like did their job. I mean just for funsies. Call me crazy for the Constitution.
It's a thought.

With 6 days notice my college announced weβd be closed for Presidentβs Day. Florida statute requires us to post a detailed syllabus including meeting dates, topics, assignments, and grade policy 45 days in advance of the first day. It feels a bit like laws and rules apply to thee but not to me.

So the Washington Post is laying off 33% of its employees.
Meanwhile the NYTs picked up 1.5 million subscribers.
Hmmmmm.....
Less than 1/3 of my A&P1 class turned in a study guide that counts as a bonus grade before the first test today. Also everything on the test is on the study guide. Ss that didnβt submit will be the ones grubbing for extra credit at end of semester. π€¦ββοΈ & we wonder why fail rate is so high.

Western Civilization

19.01.2026 19:55 β π 8 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0I donβt know what to tell you - maybe your institution wasnβt following the rules or was doing it a different way? I only know that every college/university (all 2) Iβve worked for has required it and a google search reveals the federal requirement. π€·ββοΈ
15.01.2026 20:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I work my butt off to help all my Ss make it through successfully but they do have to show up. At least once the first two weeks of the semester. Itβs not a win for them if I let them stay and they fail. A drop/withdraw can have fewer consequences.
15.01.2026 20:37 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Any academic institution that distributes financial aid is required to verify attendance in the US. Itβs designed to prevent fraud which is not insignificant.
15.01.2026 20:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yup we all go through tough times. And thatβs ok,but our choices (in or out of our control) have consequences. And sometimes students just arenβt ready to be in college, they may not have the skillset or resources in place yet. And some Ss are stealing financial aid which is why there are rules.

The irony of this piece is that only academics will be able to understand the writing. It exemplifies the inability (or lack of desire?) of many academics to communicate to a broader audience. Beautifully written but only for those already in the know. #AcademicSky

There isn't a single problem "solved" by edtech that couldn't be fixed with smaller classes led by well-paid teachers given real academic freedom
12.12.2025 18:23 β π 5604 π 1604 π¬ 11 π 162This came with a very high cost in Florida for the software which is less money for students in the classroom. Also since faculty have to write syllabi while currently teaching weβre seeing fewer course updates and innovations. Not a win for teaching and learning.
12.12.2025 21:55 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Community college faculty teach 15-18 per semester plus another 4-6 in summer. Iβd love to only teach 18 per year. My students would have the most amazing teaching and learning experience! And we still have a publishing or research expectation (lower standard tho).

With 250 students/semester Iβm thrilled if I know them at all by any part of their name. But it makes me wonder if that formal approach creates a certain vibe that could be beneficial for todayβs students. π€

Are you experiencing time-poverty? Rethink how you think about your time.
I had a coach at National Geographic (Lisa Witter Cofounder of @apolitical.bsky.social) who taught me about making time for Deep Thinking. It requires blocking off time and no interruptions. She was ahead of the research!
