Thank you Eva! I basically found a bookshop here in Sweden that carries English books and thought I could try them

This is super useful, thank you! Do you offer a digital arc when you email? Or nah?

06.03.2026 02:37 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Existential fortitude, for starters, but a basic email template would also be useful 😅

How does one go about contacting bookshops to see if they’re willing to carry one’s book?

Assume one can’t physically go there at the moment, it would be an email most likely.

Assume one is me.

Please, my internet blessings upon you etc

Ha, I thought it was funny back then. The dedication it took her to write letters, pen on paper, month after month!

Even if you have to be critical towards Aquarius.

Anyway, you can’t please everyone and there’s absolutely no way to predict how people will react to your work.

All you can do is be true to yourself and write your words your way, for as long as your publisher or your magazine or the powers that be will let you.

Back when I was writing for Glamour magazine, we used to get letters from readers. Most of them were super nice, but there was this one lady who kept sending angry letters trying to get me fired because she didn’t like how critical I was being in my astrological predictions towards Aquarius.

Success as an author has many definitions. For example, here is a pile of my books that my cat is using as her favorite new viewing platform to look outside the window, and that to me is what success looks like. Making a little chonky cat happy.

In publishing, agents get told all the time from publishers that they "don't know how to break this book out" and they aren't going to like it, but I know the answer to this perplexing issue...

It's money.

In the third grade or so, I got a score card that was all 10s (out of 10) and one 9, and when I showed it to Mother she said: “I’m not mad. I’m disappointed. Because I know you can do better.”

Anyway, that was excellent psychological preparation for what publishing your debut novel can feel like.

A New Wharton Study on AI Warns of a Growing Problem: Cognitive Surrender Casual users should pay special attention

This is a mental war that we have to win. It's not about being a luddite, it's about destroying or retaining the ability to think. It's about how insidious this becomes in a situation where generative AI is adopted and then subverted intentionally.

More and more lately, whenever I come across a take I consider wild and wrong (whether about the world in general or my work in particular), I’ve started saying out loud in my best Big Lebowski voice:

“Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.”

Most of the time, it works.
