What We Loved About Dan McQuade | Defector Today is Dan McQuade’s funeral. To celebrate our friend, we wanted to give the people he worked with a place to explain what they loved so much about him. If you would like to support Dan’s widow Jan,...

If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend $75 million on the Melania movie & $500 million for a yacht to sail off to his $55 million wedding to give his wife a $5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff.

Democracy dies in oligarchy.

Pivoting my national newspaper to fash opinion sludge and some AI-related handwaving, on account of economic headwinds and also because neither I nor anyone in my cohort of elites knows how to read.

I expected the cuts would be bad but I'm honestly stunned and sickened seeing how many great journalists the Washington Post just lost. People who nailed huge investigations, documented war zones, exposed horrific crimes, dropped all at once for failures they did not cause.

It was such a joy to work in @postsports.bsky.social. Just an absolute gift. I was so so so lucky to have been a part of this place, and so so so lucky to work with these lovely, kind, clever, incredible people. This was the dream.

I am so angry on behalf of everyone axed by the cretinous turds running the Washington Post today. The best sports section in America. A glittering international crew. It's the ruination of a precious thing by a principle-free rich man, and it makes me sick to my stomach.

Well, turns out this was my last story for The Washington Post, 2,011 bylines later.

For nine years, it was a dream in every sense of the word, no matter how many of the company's leaders tried to make it otherwise. Thanks for being part of the ride.

Crestfallen and f$&@ furious about the closure as we know it of @postsports.bsky.social by an indifferent, compromised owner and a failing publisher β€” a dept of Povich and Boswell, Wilbon and Kornheiser, Gildea and Sheinin, of poets, authors, Hall of Famers and Pulitzer finalists. A terrible day.

Bezos isn't destroying the Washington Post because it isn't profitable. He's destroying the Washington Post because he's calculated that a robust free press threatens the ability of his class to warp society around their interests

sports coverage is not about box scores anymore. it's about power and politics and corruption and sovereign wealth and real estate and the use of taxpayer money and the most publicized labor disputes in the country and yes, sometimes about ball go in hoop

As Hockey Canada players’ NHL return nears, how will they be embraced by their new teams? The players carry significant baggage, and signing them could come at a cost for teams that goes beyond finances.

Following their acquittal, the return to the NHL of Carter Hart and Michael McLeod seems imminent.

I visited Carolina and Vegas β€” the two likeliest landing spots β€” to see how the teams are handling the possibility.

The two trips went... differently.
