One way sighted people can determine what to put in alt text: Imagine you sent the post or article to a friend, and the image didn't load. What would someone need to know to get the equivalent experience and context? This will help you identify the important details.

An image describing Bookshop Day.
Book shops, especially the small independents, are important gems on our high streets. Places of serendipity and discovery to be valued. Support them if you can.

A cartoon of a battery and a sign saying Monday to Friday.
Yes, it's Friday, but hold that end of the week feeling. I need to charge up the #LipspeakerBattery to get me through Saturday as well. Lipspeakers are not only booked for the Mon to Fri 9-5. #HereWhenNeeded #Evenings #Weekends

Images from East London
When I woke up on Friday morning I had no idea that I would be #Lipspeaking in this part of London a few days later.
A lovely booking in an interesting, developing area.

Reflecting on many things today as this date marks my 10-years cancer-free. Thankyou @uclh.bsky.social for removing my cancerous bladder and fitting me with a #Neobladder. I wouldn’t be alive today without you, and I certainly wouldn’t have trained as a #Lipspeaker. #BladderCancer

A week of two halves. First half dedicated to my #Writing work and the rest of the week is all about #Lipspeaking. Love a dual career.

1. Benefits of Access to Work
Access to Work is a government scheme that helps support deaf and disabled people start and stay in work.
It can help you:
Hire disabled people with the skills you need
Retain an employee who develops a disability or health condition
Show that you value your employees
2. How does it work?
The employee will apply for Access to Work online or via phone.
They are eligible if they are:
Over 16
In, or about to start, paid employment
Live and work in England, Scotland and Wales
3. Job Interviews
Job applicants invited to interview can apply for communication support.
Make sure applicants are aware of this so they can have the appropriate support.
You could pay for the interview support direct to take away the extra work from the applicant.
4. How you can support
Encourage employees to apply for Access to Work and support with the application where needed.
The paperwork is an extra burden for the employee so consider allowing for ATW admin as part of the normal working hours.
Did you know Access to Work is a government scheme to support deaf and disabled people in work?
You can make your workplace more inclusive by understanding how it works and supporting employees where necessary.

Deaf lipreaders can misunderstand shop assistants. In this picture a lady learns in her receipt that the handbag in the sale was actually £50.00 & not £15.00.
Words such as ‘fifty’ & ‘fifteen’ have similar lip shapes. These are examples of #homophenes

The French proverb, “lire les lèvres, c’est entendre avec les yeux…” translates as “…to read lips is to hear with the eyes…”
I think this is a succinct representation of lipreader friendship.
