Today people went around my neighborhood in north east London spray painting St George’s crosses onto people’s homes. Many of these houses have non British people living in them.

This is getting very dark, very quick.

yes they do. they're spreading disinformation to people who can be confused by it, in order to keep doing things that make money (in this case, fossil fuels). that distinction is foundational to understanding what is happening at all scales of government, including and especially what RFK is doing

To those who can: speak out. Silence won’t fix the wrongs in science- and we have more power than we think.

ECRs keep science alive, but it should never come at the cost of our well-being. Mutual respect is the foundation of all relationships, and academia is no exception.

Phage provoke growth delays and SOS response induction despite CRISPR-Cas protection | Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences Bacteria evolve resistance against their phage foes with a wide range of resistance strategies whose costs and benefits depend on the level of protection they confer and on the costs for maintainance....

How do bacteria choose what type of defences to use against phages? We explored that question in the last paper I worked on as a postdoc at the Uni of Exeter @uniofexeteresi.bsky.social with Stineke van Houte, Stefano Pagliara and Edze Westra (not on Bluesky)

Population diversity declines between inoculated and exposed guinea pigs. Viral titers in nasal lavage samples are indicated by the overall height of the bar. Red lines show LOD (50 PFU/mL). Colors within the bars represent unique barcodes, and the height of each color indicates barcode frequency within the sample. Plots for individual animals are paired with those of their cage mate. Representative pairs for direct contact (top half) and aerosol (bottom half) exposure are shown from three experimental replicates. Guinea pig ID numbers are shown in the upper right corner of each plot.

What causes viral transmission bottlenecks? This study uses barcoded virions to show that in the case of #influenza A #virus, early within-host replication dynamics (rather than a reduced inoculum population) drive loss of diversity during transmission @plosbiology.org πŸ§ͺ plos.io/4ngicDK

mRNA vaccines are safe, have been in development for decades, & have far broader applications than older vaccine technologies.

New vaccine technologies evolve when scientists have tools & knowledge to make something more elegant or complex that wasn’t possible before.
