The FathomNet Database is an open-source library for ML models and expertly labeled ocean imagery that can help us better understand marine life and ocean health. Our database will continue to grow with data contributed by @mbarinews.bsky.social, @schmidtocean.bsky.social, and more partners.

The FathomNet Database has been selected as one of 10 new datasets added to the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource Pilot. We look forward to seeing how this integration can contribute to advances in machine learning and accelerate the analysis of ocean visual data.

We are thrilled to share that National Geographic Magazine’s September issue features @katycroffbell.bsky.social and the development of DORIS, a low-cost deep-sea imaging system created with @bluerobotics.bsky.social.

We extend our gratitude to Kaggle, the FGVC Workshop organizers, and the hashtag#CV4Ecology Workshop Series for their continued support.

The response was extraordinary. 1,508 submissions from 109 participants made this our liveliest Kaggle competition yet. With 16 active discussion threads and over 60 comments, the dialogue was thoughtful, constructive, and technically deep.

Building on previous competitions that focused on out-of-sample detection (2023) and novel category discovery (2024), this year we challenged participants with hierarchical classification.

These competitions are a powerful way to engage the ML community with ocean science while surfacing key challenges that arise when applying ML in complex, data-scarce environments like the deep sea.

For the past three years, FathomNet has worked with Kaggle to host machine learning (ML) competitions that advance marine computer vision.

To assist in that upskilling, and to foster a community in which those impacted can help each other build AI skills, the CV4Ecology program is organizing a two-week remote workshop in May of 2025 that will teach AI methods to former US public sector conservation scientists.

The AI for wildlife conservation community has been impacted by recent layoffs in the US public sector; many conservation scientists have reached out to AI practitioners for advice on building AI skills before re-entering the workforce.

In marine ecology, accurate taxonomic classification is essential for addressing fundamental questions:

--> What is the ecosystem biodiversity and how does it change over time?
