Wargames. Playing, collecting, designing and discussing about them with an eye to the less trodden titles. And everything else around them. At my discretion. Designer of Operation Bøllebank, Nothing Left to Bomb, By Stealth and Sea and a few others.

Indeed.
The pilot keeps flying but the B-N sends cues to the PDI that tells the pilot whether they are on the path or not.
Or so I understand.
When you get a little too carried away by your current game design project…😎
A critical instrument of a B-25, star of my upcoming Catch-18 / The Battle of the Brenner for @snafustore.bsky.social
I managed to play the 2nd learning scenario of Grant.
Most went according to plan.
Top Left: the battle for New Madrid
Top R: USS Essex runs the batteries of Island n.10 to win over a CSA flotilla at Madrid Bend.
Bottom R: battle of Madrid Bend
BL: before the last turn (April II)
Fantastic! We just gifted the same to my son for his birthday a few days ago!

Ready for my 2nd learning game of Grant - The Western Campaign of 1862.
This time the action revolves around Island no.10 and New Madrid.
Pope is in charge coming south from Commerce, with the help of Foote flotilla in Cairo.
This time around I am double curious as I own the one they just played and I am friend with several people that were involved in its making (Give Us Victories that is).

I have been on huge ACW kick myself in the past year and picked up lots of books and games on the subject.
Sadly for my wallet, it has made me aware of some more games I want to buy!
Here are the most likely candidates for my next purchases…
…Playing them will be a different matter!
Big shout-out to the crew of @fredserval.bsky.social Homo Ludens “We Intend to Move on Your Works” podcast: @pierrevj.bsky.social @drcrossbows.bsky.social and Alexandre.I have literally devoured all the episodes in my commute in the past 2 weeks and greatly enjoyed the discussion. Can’t wait 4 more!

Wow 🥲
This picture brings back memories of over 30 years ago.
I stood on that very pier with my American high school best buddies Steve and Jim.
No regrets now, but I miss that feeling of having a whole future to live and that anything was possible.
Minor complaint: I can see battles can become tedious as the CRT favors large, multiple divisions, good leaders, good weather and the defender…but this was a scenario designed to learn the ropes, so there maybe that.

So far so good.
I like how you need to plan your moves using the rivers, the impact of weather and the overall operational feel. Also, I like how losses are assessed after battles, while battles are won with one side breaking.
Battle reinforcement was successful and after a very long battle the Fort finally capitulated to the Union.
Attacking a minor fort in rain is a default -3. Leaders can offset that and Grant helps even more as Army commander, but after 2 Hits (-1) it becomes a struggle…
Last turn of the introductory scenario 1 of Grant - The W Campaign of 1862: the siege of Ft. Donelson.
The batteries recovered from suppression, which means the only option is attacking from Ft. Henry. I transferred McClernand and Hurlbut to Ft. Henry to reinforce the battle.
Spent a few hours with Grant - The Wester Campaign of 1862, soloing the 1st intro scenario.
Conquered Ft. Henry in the 1st turn (but almost got Grant killed in battle).
Ft. Donelson proved a much tougher nut to crack: the gunboats ended up in bad shape for only 2/3 of the batteries suppressed
Exploring the Western theater of the ACW with Grant by Compass Games from designer Jon Southard.
Setup of the introductory first scenario (solo).
A BIG theater for sure!
The store is “I giochi dei grandi” in Verona.
They started in the late 70s / early 80s and they used to offer photocopies of home-made, typed translations with the games they were selling.
Huge catalogue in the 90s.
I still have a physical copy lying somewhere.
Got these two in the mail yesterday (with the respective games).
A bit of context: one of the oldest wargame shops in Italy is closing down. They did A LOT to spread the hobby in our country, so this is a bit out of respect to them 🫡

I find a cure to my wargaming design delusions to be…
…more wargaming!
In this case I am preparing to playtest a design by a fellow designer.
More to follow!
Really looking forward to this…awaiting my copy to show up any day now…

I will be demoing my upcoming “Catch-18 - The Battle of the Brenner” game for @snafustore.bsky.social
The demo will be via Vassal and multiple players can take a hot seat and play a turn or two!
Come and be merry!
Thank you Volko and Thank you Zilla.
Amen.
You don’t want me to whistle!
I would ruin the atmosphere!
That said, yes, a very nice, near perfect little game!
Indeed! My understanding is that it was done by the daughter of Catastrophe Games’ boss and it is her first work on illustrating games.

…in the second one I came “this” close to winning.
Made it to Beaufort Sea, only to see my ship crushed by too much ice…
(read the event cards from right to left).
Such an evocative great little solitaire game!
Played two games of Lonely Cairn by @catastrophegames.bsky.social
In the first one I was stopped in Larsen Sound having lost the hull of the ship thanks to two consecutive Sunless Days events…
