Genuinely fascinating to look at Fukuyama saying β€œthere’s probably going to be a groundswell of people in the West who become uncomfortable with peace and prosperityβ€œ and uh, all due respect, he may have undersold how big that groundswell would be.

The idea "Americans won't care until it affects gas prices" is perpetuated not through actual experience, but because PEOPLE LIKE US REPEAT IT ENDLESSLY WHILE OTHER PEOPLE LIKE US SIGH IN CONTEMPT AND NOD OUR HEADS.

It is NOT TRUE IN ANY EMPIRICALLY OBSERVABLE WAY.

The idea that Americans will not care about a political issue unless it's described in terms of impacts on their stomachs, or even worse, their gas prices, is not supported by real-world evidence. It is a contemptuous myth propagated by the smug political class.

β€œ[Marx/Christ] left us all the instructions in the handy guidebook, so we can just actively speedrun through [capitalism/the birth pangs] to get to [eternal communism/the Kingdom of God] because we know [the fixed and immutable laws of history/the day and hour]”

We tend to call latter-day communism just evangelicalism with the serial numbers filed off and painted red, which is true but it cuts both ways

This is Leninism carrying a cross

"why would Iran build their military bases so close to civilian areas? they're asking for civilians to get hit"

I’m sorry, doing this in a baseball cap sold by your campaign store is deliberately disrespecting the dead.

what the rurals want is to be given everything they ask for and told that they’re better than the city dwellers and that’s why they deserve it, and while individual dems can run campaigns on it, it’s not a national party responsibility to back them up

this was the IRA, which every senate democrat voted for and every senate republican voted against

In my ideal future, Jake Tapper is immiserated and begging for coins outside a Wawa's after which he gets hit by a ballistic missile, so this is less of an issue

Realism cannot conceptualize, 'The US is at war because these specific individuals are filled with bloodlust and want to watch snuff films.' let alone begin to provide useful analysis of it.

It must be left in a dustheap of history with the other failed theories.

Ours is Israel, the Russians had Assadist Syria, the Chinese have Myanmar, the French have Rwanda

Who are the Brits inviting to the dance? Also Rwanda but for different reasons?

Absolutely world-class bit on the part of the Sanders left, Yglesias center, and Trump right to pretend for over a decade straight that this was somehow a point of contention between them

This one goes out to all the dupes in the β€œanti-war” crowd who thought there was anything more to this regime than libidinal sadism against Muslims and Latinos

me 2017: theright wing culture epitomized by the president has uncomfortable parallels with Kylo Ren
the president, 2026: I am Kylo Ren. And also Walter White. And also Deadpool, and Optimus Prime

CBS obtained video of the DHS killing of an unarmed man in Texas that DHS concealed for nearly a year, which clearly contradicts claims that he violently rammed anyone. He is shot with his brake lights on, car not moving or barely moving. Another DHS crime.

another people have made this observation before me but everytime I think of the UNSC I just remember everytime the US voted against a real ceasfire in Gaza, or the times Russia voted against condemnation of invading Ukraine, or the times China voted against condemning Myanmar

the unsc has essentially devoled into "5 countries get to do genocide and also anyone close enough to one of the big 5"

For that matter we also do the same thing, cynically protecting our favorite segregationist deadweight liability in the Levant from any insult by that hallowed body for reasons of racism and/or deluded muscle memory

07.03.2026 06:11 β€” πŸ‘ 36    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Because we supply most of its muscle any cynic who leads us can basically subvert it at will and no one can check our ability to do so, and any true believer who leads us is going to run into the problem of the Russians and Chinese cynically protecting their favorite pets

There probably has not been a greater single obstacle to peacemaking in the last century than the United Nations Security Council, which as constructed manages to both inspire vigilante aggression and be the source of preferential denials of R2P

They're going to write books about all the big brain moves of this gang of imbeciles and among them will be "Spending a year trying to kill renewable energy and then launching a war that sends oil prices soaring"

Yeah, you can absolutely neglect this and get away with it if nothing ever happens but uh as a famous bald dictator once said, "there are weeks where decades happen"

It's a bit of a crackhead argument but I think you can argue that foreign policy *is* a "kitchen table issue" because sufficiently prominent foreign policy outcomes (mostly negative ones) will appear on the local evening news

06.03.2026 23:31 β€” πŸ‘ 73    πŸ” 4    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

I think it's accurate to say that most voters don't care about foreign policy positions but they do care about foreign policy outcomes inasmuch as reporting on them contributes to a general sense of uncertainty and instability which has a lot of unpleasant implications given our media environment
