This 2D #MOF was a pleasure to study! Distinct #chiral phases emerged as a result of tilted molecules, giving us a great excuse to perform #nc-AFM 😏. Each chiral phase uniquely confined the Ag(111) surface state resulting in changes to the 2DEG band structure driven purely by structural symmetry.

Triangulene dimers linked by one or two para-biphenyl units were synthesized on Au(111). STM, non-contact AFM, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal an open-shell singlet magnetic exchange coupling for Dimer 1 (ES-T=15β€…mV), influenced by the dihedral angles of the two para-biphenyl units. Dimers 2β€² with an ES-T=6.6β€…mV were obtained from a more flexible precursor equipped with one para-biphenyl linker.
