I've noticed that writing advice doesn't really transfer from one person to another. What works for one writer very often doesn't work for another writer. I read "how to write" books for years to no avail before I discovered This One Weird Trick That Only Works For Me, Not You, Sorry.

I just realized that what used to be #NaNoWriMo month is almost over. Has anybody been counting their words this month? How many have you got and where have you counted them?

I transferred all my writing to I Write Like. Even the bits of random thoughts and phrases I now keep there. It happened naturally because it opens fast, it's clutter-free, the writing field is huge and yet I still see all my documents on the left and the tools I need on the right.

Scrolling doesn't equal reading though, does it?

Same. Neil Gaiman is an excellent storyteller, though.

Thumbelina and Coraline come to mind, but both were taken by rather sinister creatures.

I’d like to add that I’ve heard this too, though I don’t remember the original source. The idea was thatΒ short stories tell a clean, focused arc that fits well for a movie adaptation, whileΒ novels, with their broader scope and multiple threads, are often easier to adapt into a TV show.

Do you think the first draft of a short story should really be written in one sitting? I think that’s an overused piece of advice that rarely works.

A close-up photograph of a page from a book, featuring the title "The bridge"

The text itself is:

The bridge

Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge. The bridge was being repaired: she went right through the Danger sign. The car fell a hundred feet into the ravine, smashing through the treetops feathery with new leaves, then burst into flames and rolled down into the shallow creek at the bottom. Chunks of the bridge fell on top of it. Nothing much was left of her but charred smithereens.
