If Israel can annex Gaza, why shouldn’t China annex Taiwan, and Russia annex Ukraine, and the United States annex Greenland, …? www.nytimes.com/2025/08/07/w...

I wonder, if each of us were to declare Israel’s starvation of Gaza unacceptableβ€”if we were to join Joe Rogan, Marjorie Taylor Green, Bernie Sanders, Miss Rachel, and everyone in betweenβ€”how many children’s lives could be saved. I wonder why we don’t do that.

On average, Israel kills a Palestinian child in Gaza every 45 minutes, and each American contributes $0.40 per day to help them do it.

It is indeed troubling that Taiwan, a nation threatened by annexation, might compromise its values by supporting an occupying power elsewhere. I hope Taiwan will soon align with the international community in condemning Israel’s actions. Principle demands it. 3/3

Author @brianhioe.bsky.social puts it well: β€œgiven Taiwan’s international exclusion, Taiwan has long called for international support, while also stating that Taiwan can help. Here, however, Taiwan has prov[en] willing to help Israel as it conducts a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.” 2/3

Taiwan’s government is reportedly considering lending aid to an Israeli settlement in the West Bankβ€”territory widely recognized as illegally occupied. 1/3

#Evolution folks, I’m hoping to read in succession Charles Darwin’s
(1) Voyage of the Beagle
(2) On the Origin of Species
(3) The Descent of Man

The Penguin Classics editions look very fine, but does anyone have other favorite editions or versions of these texts they recommend?

Just wonderful. Originally published in 1940 and updated in 1972, I came across this book in the footnotes of Richard Foster’s Celebration of Discipline.

Reading: β€œthe process of passing from understanding less to understanding more by the operation of your mind upon a book.”

In my view, those who continue to support Israel’s inhumane actions seem prepared to become a sort of anti-Hamas, distinguished from terrorists only by their wealth and technological sophistication.

For when we wield the terror we have suffered, we become the devils we hate. 8/8

β€œWhat is going on in Palestine today cannot be justified by any moral code of conduct.” His words remain relevant. In the 1930s it was with β€œthe help of the British bayonet” that Zionists were β€œdespoiling a people”; today it is with American ammunition. 7/8

In 1938, Ghandi wrote a piece titled β€œJustice in Palestine,” putting it this way: β€œPalestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French…” 6/8

Palestinian Arabs resisted primarily through non-violent means for at least a decade as their land was stolen from them, until they could do so no longer. I wonder how long I would have remained peaceful. 5/8

Balfour continued: β€œZionism, be it right or wrong, good or bad, is rooted in age-long traditions, in present needs, in future hopes, of far profounder import than the desires and prejudices of the 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land.” 4/8

In 1919, Balfour wrote a confidential memo that explicitly stated the Zionist purpose to colonize-and-displace: β€œin Palestine we do not propose even to go through the form of consulting the wishes of the present inhabitants of the country…” 3/8

In November 1917, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration, advocating β€œthe establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.” Thus the Zionist project of colonizing Palestine gained imperial backingβ€”ironically, often with support from European antisemites. 2/8

In the year 1917, the population of Palestine was approximately 94% Arab. Life went along more or less peaceably among the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities. 1/8

I was curious to estimate how much I am personally contributing to Israel’s genocide of 2 million Palestinians through my taxes. It turns out each U.S. taxpayer is contributing at least $0.40 per day, or $148 per year. 1/3

Next, the Tax Foundation reports that there are about 153.8 million U.S. taxpayers (year 2022).

Taken together, these figures imply ~$22.76 billion / 153.8 million taxpayers = $147.98 per taxpayer per year.

Does anyone have a better estimate? 3/3

This simple estimate was made as follows. First, Brown University’s Costs of War Project reports that the U.S. gave Israel $22.76 billion in military aid and related operations in the year ending September 2024. They also note this is a conservative figure. 2/3

In the year 2025, Israel and the US actively starved 2 million people, half of them children, by blocking the delivery of food from international aid groups.

It is still 2025, and it is not too late to say something.

No Proof Hamas Routinely Stole U.N. Aid, Israeli Military Officials Say

For nearly two years, Israel has increasingly starved Palestinians under the justification that Hamas systematically steals food from U.N. aid. That was a lie.

If Palestinian children are taught to hate, their most effective teachers may be the Israeli soldiers who, for the better part of a century, have mocked, maimed, and murdered their families.
