Last week I visited the largest rice millers in Ghana, to see our fortification project in action. Cereals fortified with minerals and a selection of vitamins remains one of the most cost effective ways to deal with micronutrient deficiency. With thanks to @wfp.org and @rockefellerfdn.bsky.social

We evolved to match local micronutrient levels, which may be a problem Most human populations evolved to cope with low or high local levels of micronutrients such as zinc, but these localised adaptations might now be problematic

Two-thirds of global heating caused by richest 10%, study suggests Paper in Nature Climate Change journal reveals major role wealthy emitters play in driving climate extremes

This reminds me of a quote by R.H.Tawney, the famous British economist.

Arsenic and Old Rice: Climate Change Will Make Staple Food More Dangerous Splinter is your home for news and opinions that challenge power in our political and economic system that's becoming more unhinged each and every day.

A study out yesterday finds that climate change will add a bunch of arsenic to more than half the world's staple food.

Loved @jennifer-clapp.bsky.social's book on the history of Big Ag. I wish I could have read it at the start of my career.

Don't be put off by the cover there's loads about our contemporary food system too, and to quote Pearl S Buck 'If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday' πŸ“šπŸ’™

On the plus side dollar weakness lowers the value of dollar-denominated debt, which would alleviate some fiscal constraints for highly indebted economies in Africa . (Would love an actual economist to confirm if that’s true )

Trump just reversed course on two key U.S. climate pledges By pulling out of two global climate finance programs, the United States has increased challenges for vulnerable countries.

The US pulled out of a board overseeing the β€œloss & damage” fund for vulnerable countries hit by climate disasters; and the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) that'd help several large developing countries move away from fossil fuels, particularly coal. www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...
