Excited to share our latest work on how viruses βrewireβ the cell division machinery of infected cells.
Investigating viral strategies provides insights into how key cellular processes are controlled, and where they can fail.

The question of the origin of #SARS-CoV-2 is a matter of significant scientific and public interest. Current publicly available data suggests a natural origin, while evidence supporting a lab origin remains scarce. Although no hypothesis has been definitively proven, the available data indicate...

Transmission of unfolded protein responseβa regulator of disease progression, severity, and spread in virus infections | mBio
The unfolded protein response (UPR) is a cellular stress response pathway activated
by the accumulation of misfolded or unfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum
(ER) (1). The UPR aims to restore...
ER stress in cells (cell-autonomous) can be transmitted to neighbouring unstressed cells to generate a broader systemic ER stress response (cell non-autonomous ER stress) and hence have a wider impact in an organism where the stress was initially induced. Its significance to virus infections! ππ½

Endothelial inflammation in COVID-19
Disrupted endothelial function underlies the multiorgan complications of COVID-19
Infection with #SARSCoV2 has highlighted how altered endothelial functions contribute to multiorgan health effects during the acute phase of #COVID19 and potentially to the longer-term consequences associated with #LongCovid.

We focused on a biological process shared between the 2 tissues: the unfolded protein response (UPR). Both tissues become highly secretory but make different cargoes. Cells activated the UPR prior to cargo production, suggesting developmental anticipation of future stress. (5/)

Poster of key discoveries in virology, starting in 1796
Viruses are therefore important: they affect all life on earth. They themselves also change, as we now notice with #SARSCoV2 who has made the leap to humans. Viruses can sometimes even determine what will survive. Don't underestimate these little bundles of information.
