Faster than light travel is possible… kinda. Distant galaxies are receding from us at superluminal speeds. How can that be, and how can we see them if they're flying away faster than the light they emit?

A rich star field with brightly colored nebulaic gases, the core top left of center is rich in hydrogen and oxygen (green and blue in the filter palette) and appears to some to be the head of a lion with bright dramatic cyans and yellows while to the lower right are darker blue and red clouds of an oxygen (blue) and sulfur (red) rich area that some consider the lion's body. This is Sharpless 132, which is commonly called the Lion Nebula.

Around 13 hours of imaging very even split over SHO filters of the dramatic Lion Nebula (Sharpless 132) in Cepheus. It has really interesting ray-like structures, huge bow waves, areas strong in hydrogen and weak in sulfur and vice versa. Quite spectacular. 🔭

A nebula with red and blue colors faintly glows in the light of a very bright star.

The Ghost of Cassiopeia nebula. Cassiopeia (the bright star) is an Ethiopian queen in Greek mythology. Her star illuminates nearby dust clouds, imparting a ghostly, ethereal appearance.

Been working away at this. Quite a challenge. These steps down from Bathwick Fields towards the little alley to the canal will be familiar to many university folk, and I caught it at the start of term, when students were streaming down on a warm, sunny day. 'The Walk Into Town' - acrylic on paper.

The Andromeda Core shows the central region of the Andromeda Galaxy (also known as M31), which is the nearest large galaxy to us at around 2.5 million light years away. Andromeda is a barred spiral galaxy like our own Milky Way. It’s made up of an outlying spiral structure of dust, gas and stars connected by a dense, bar-shaped concentration of bright giant stars in the galactic core. This isn’t a simple target to capture on camera. Competition judge and Royal Observatory astronomer Dr Ed Bloomer explains: “The cores of galaxies are often extremely bright, and unless the astrophotographer is careful it can overwhelm the image and obscure that lovely detail.” However, he says, “What we have here is an image which preserves an astonishing amount of detail right towards the very heart of Andromeda, which is extremely difficult to do.”
