oof yeah these are so terrible. drivers so frequently ignore them they seem worse than the flashing beacons (and certainly worse than a normal signal) The upcoming mem drive changes will also use hawk for mid block crossings (at least as of current plan)

And with that I'm all done for the evening. Overall I'm excited for the project, a few areas that could be better imho but overall a great improvement to the parkland

A surprising amount of comments about e-bikes. Also TIL that only Class 1 ebikes are allowed. Super unclear, and the US e-bike classification system is just so unclear.

"Why not normal signals instead of HAWK" - DCR claims that signals require "timing control devices" which would go red without any input... This seems... wrong? I have certainly seen signals that are run off a beg button.

Excellent question about why Cambridge st and Western Ave were not included. Allegedly due to the complexity of the intersections and "traffic" lane reductions aren't an option. There are plans to bring the path up to a new spec though.

Explanation for why the path isn't bike/ped separated the whole way: Can't fit it without cutting down some trees. But there will still be separate materials and it will be marked as separated

Construction starts tomorrow with the delivery of the trailer, expected timeline of 2 years depending on weather. Pretty exciting overall and it would be nice! Now on to the Q&A section!

Two overlook decks for park users to relax and enjoy the park - not sure why it was important to call out not wanting to be worried about "bikers coming up behind them" πŸ€”

Eliminating the night-time parking lane. Truly the most bizarre parking I have ever seen and it always seems so dangerous

Apparently the city of Cambridge pushed for HAWK beacons instead of rapid flashing beacons for mid street x-ing. I have mixed feelings about this, I find that sometimes drivers are confused by the multiple red lights shown on the HAWK, but it's certainly an improvement over today

No healthy London Plane trees will be removed - maybe this means the "pro-tree+nimby" will have to latch onto some other complaint

Eliminating the guard rail "as it serves to increase vehicle speed" and lowering the speed limit on the road - hell yeah, we love to see some infrastructure based safety improvements

Great slide showing the current 6ft path alongside a worn dirt path where folks are forced to walk today. "One of the most dangerous sections today"

Checking out the www.mass.gov/event/memori... (Thread) The initial images and pictures shown on the page look good although I think I would prefer a wider path (but that might not be really possible)

Fortunately, no one insists that bicycles belong on the interstate. But as I watched the video of the scene, I couldn’t help wondering how long it will be before the unrelenting bicycle lobby begins to demand just that. After all, if it makes sense to carve bike lanes out of Massachusetts Avenue, Beacon Street, and other congested thoroughfares in Boston, Cambridge, and Brookline, why shouldn’t the l

Great quote from Mayor Bhalla of Hoboken: "When we say 'No parking' in front of a fire hydrant, do people say, 'You’re taking away a parking spot?' We need to start looking at daylighting the same way. That’s not a space to park, because of safety reasons."

A lot of the really loud free hub designs have a lot more engagement points, meaning you have to spin the pedal less before the hub engages and starts moving you forward. It’s definitely only a marginal improvement, some ppl like the louder noise for safety reasons (I’m not sure I agree though)
