No one has championed norms. People are arguing for effectiveness. Omar shouting out is taking Trump's bait. Responding like that is exactly what people in Minneapolis refused to do, which is what made their resistance effective. They resisted the urge to give Trump what he wants.

The question isn't what feels good. The question is what is effective in reaching voters. It's not about norms - it's about what will work. What positive has or is likely to come from Omar's actions, justified though they may be?

Part of the problem here is a long-standing issue of mine: The public gets a huge benefit from beat journalism—but the journalism industry does not, by and large, recognize beat journalism for its value or when it comes to awards and prizes. Those go to investigations and "one big thing" features.
