We are SUPER excited to be heading towards our 5th birthday in March - and are looking forward to reading #Book60, which will be #ThatBeautifulAtlanticWaltz. If you would like to join us, email info@marsocsci.net. We will be confirming the March details asap!

For many of us, this is a read that has been sitting on our #ToBeRead piles, and so it has been lovely to read it, and take the glimmers from it. Not necessarily one we would usually include in #MarSocSciBookClub - a lesson to really never judge a book by its cover...or title!

There was definitely recognition that the read covers a lot of very big topics, and perhaps doesn't have the time to deal with them in sufficient detail - this left us wondering if maybe we weren't the intended audience (especially since we were expecting #Spineless but about phosphorescence)!
28.02.2025 11:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
At times though, we found that we lost the thread between some of the stories. Linked to this, we wondered if perhaps this a book that you're not meant to read in on sitting, but is one that you can draw on to remind you to look for those #glimmers.

Some enjoyed the read for its positive message, the focus on finding awe and wonder in the small moments, of finding our #glimmers and our own #phosphoresence. There were reflections on friendship, and the importance of generational wisdom, which we also enjoyed!

This #OceanRead received mixed reviews, with many feeling like the book was very different to expectations. With its title and ocean-themed cover, we expected this to be strongly linked to #Phosphoresence and full of ocean stories - and this is very much not the case! #MarSocSciBookClub

And yet, there are wonderful, intriguing descriptions, and the story definitely sucked us in - and our chat didn't put people off finishing! A very interesting read as we start a new year of bookclub reads!

The book is written from multiple perspectives, and in some places feels very long, arduous and drawn out - perhaps a reflection of a voyage on what was known as a 'coffin ship' (We did say it wasn't a January read!)

Many of the characters are unlikeable, and the realities of Irish history are hard to read in this story. We drew similarities with ongoing conflicts, migration, challenges facing refugees across the globe - and how in many cases, nothing has changed.

For those of us who knew little about this time in Irish history, Star of the Sea gave us a valuable insight into what was happening at the time - this is not a story of redemption, but one that is bleak, dark and hard.

Drawing on real excerpts from the time, the novel explores the interconnected stories of a number of passengers, from the land-owning Merridiths to the impoverished Mary Duane, who is escaping famine ridden Ireland for a new home.

We have kick-started our #MarSocSciBookClub sessions for 2025! This month's read was a bit of a heavy going one for January - #StaroftheSea focuses on the year 1847, taking place on an Irish famine ship bound for New York.
