It is interesting, demoralizing, yet not surprising to witness the brain drain of excellent university scholars and teachers from US states with regressive and fascist education policies for positions in US states that respect academic freedom.

Get unis to pay for more librarians to assist students in learning the pragmatics of research. Get unis to invest in actual books. Invest in more tenure track lines & TAs so I'm not solely responsible for teaching history to a room of 50 students who have never been exposed to shit pre-1500.

I am watching police officers assault professors and students at Emory, snipers lining up on the roofs at IU and Ohio State. My academic colleagues: There is no excuse for staying silent. State violence & threats of violence against nonviolent protestors are unacceptable. Period.

Columbia's president, Minouche Shafik, has given protesting students until midnight to agree to a plan to dismantle their encampment. I fear another series of big errors.
