I do think acknowledging uncertainty is also important. Allows for better SDM and patient focused care, even if we don’t have good numbers.

Yah. Even when we have A number (CHADS-VASC, surg risk strat scores, bleed s/p fall on apix, etc.), IRL, not as simple as plucking the number. But I guess approach useful. I will quote recurrence of PJI, osteo, etc. that are averages and then be “but I think higher/lower for you bc XYZ”.

But how does one memorize numbers (or even look them up, if they even exist for each patient for each permutation… practically impossible). So the last block is really the one that feels most adjustable.

I have a patient right now, almost certain he doesn’t have TB retinitis, but I don’t have numbers- just no epi risk, negative quant etc. we’re also bad at pegging a pre-test probability. Been a few papers about how poorly doctors estimate probability ie. Acute MI given positive trop etc.

I got to take Dr. Zikmund-Fisher’s class while I was doing my MPH and honestly, it should be a required part of med school curriculums!! I think the problem is less that patients can’t understand numbers if we use evidence based communication, but that I often don’t have or know those numbers.
