Almost halfway through Monster, She Wrote: The Women Who Pioneered Horror & Speculative Fiction by Lisa KrΓΆger and Melanie R. Anderson. Love it, especially after reading The Bewitching.

Also enjoying a Woodland Latte at Miro, in Ballard. ❀️

I have a knack of discovering things. Tuesday I walked for a mile+ in hopes of seeing the sun set behind the mountains and ended up at restaurant perfect for my husband.

Today I decided to turn left before the gps wanted me to and found an art supply store that hadn’t come up when I searched.

The novel reminded me of the stories my mom would tell, from her Italian and Slavic background, of witches and of her gifts of foresight and warnings. Which of course nurtured in me a love of horror (especially the type Moreno-Garcia writes) which I now see in my son.

The second is The Bewitching by @silviamg.bsky.social a wonderful book that felt like a warm hug from my mom and made me a bit nostalgic for the time I was in a student at a New England college. The only thing that made me read it in chunks is my now 9 year old who wanted to, you know, do things. :)

Read two books so far this week. The first is The Second Chance Convenience Store by Kim Ho-Yeon, translated by Janet Hong.

Adored the heck out of it. A book of connection from a time of isolation. <3

It says a whole lot that in what DriveThruRPG wrote and some defenses of it, the violence is against marginalized identities and/or more extreme than what the intro had.

Many products sold in the U.S. are made in El Salvador. In response to the El Salvador president’s statements today, we’re calling for an immediate boycott of all Salvadoran-made goods. Please help by listing any products or brands made in El Salvador in the comments below.

Nina was criminally underrated. Look at those pages! She was superior to many better known male hacks of the Golden Age.

She quit comics in 1950 just as the witch hunts heated up. Smart move. As I recall she was a magazine illustrator after that, which was a much better, and better paying career.

Also, if you're concerned about personal safety:

History shows that, under fascism, staying passive comes with no better odds of survival than engaging in civil, covert, or even military resistance. So you might as well resist in whatever way your skills, age, ability,.and conscience permit.

I know it’s overwhelming at the moment. Remember each of you are a member of the resistance.

Don’t comply in advance.

Existing. Persisting. Those are acts of rebellion.

You are loved.

DOGE’s Website Is Just One Big X Ad The source code for the new Department of Government Efficiency’s β€œofficial US government website” points to X as its primary source of authority, while sharing links to the site sends users to x.com.

On senators falling in line because of death threats:

My mom worked as a cook at a hospital where abortions are performed. People regularly tried to shoot her for "killing babies". She still went and did her job because it needed doing and she had agreed to do it. That's how it works.

I got death threats for accurately describing GamerGate. I kept going with my work, despite the fact that I never had access to either the wealth or the elaborate security protocols of a United States Senator.

My husband was listening to an Adam Ragusea podcast today and they were talking about D&D. It was super interesting hearing them notice some of the things many of us fought hard for, like not having entire groups be auto evil.

The White Minority's Lament

The other month I sat
by the window drinking tea
peering out into the night
to see what I could see,

when I espied my neighbor
(he had a hammer-and-sickle flag)
trudging down the sidewalk
with some sort of heavy bag.

I’d never liked him anyway-
his politics weren’t right.
I watched men lead him to a van
and drive into the night.

Next morning when I went outside
the hammer-and-sickle was down
And I never saw him around.
I guess that he left town.

The other week I sat
by the window drinking tea
peering at the afternoon
to see what I could see,

when I spotted the lady from down the street,
with backpack, and half dressed.
I must admit that seeing that
did make me feel distressed.

She looked like she'd been crying,
and I couldn't begin to guess why
but I was glad I wasn’t there
to meet those teary eyes.

Who knew where they were taking her,
the two men with the van?
They said she was really a man.
And we never saw her again.

The other day I sat

peering at the sunset
to see what I could see,

when right across the street there was
a family in the cold.
I’d been friendly with them since
their daughter was three years old.

I saw that their three children stood
(the girl and two small boys)
there in the waning light of day,
fearfully clutching their toys.

I didn’t know what they had done
(it must have crossed a line).
Their skin was darker than mine.
They said β€œThey went home to their kind.”

And just this fine morning I sat
by the window drinking tea
looking out at the dawning day
to see what I could see,

when a van pulled into my driveway
ferrying several men
who banged on my door and shouted
that I was to let them in.

β€œAh, they must have questions”
about those other folk, I thought.
But when I let them in they told me
it was me they sought!

I said I’d tell them anything,
anything, just ask!
But they said they already knew;
that was not their task.

Panicked, I looked round and round
as they took hold of me
but my neighbor peering from her house
was all that I could see.

β€œHelp me! Are you not my keeper?
I’ve treated you respectfully!”
But she just stared and shook her head,
smiling ruefully.
And then she sipped her tea.
And no one spoke for me.
Oh, where could everyone be?

Okay attempt two. My sister (who sings beautifully) is recording my poem "The White Minority's Lament", which I wrote in response to my parents' gay neighbor having Trump signs in his yard. In honor of this honor, I'm gonna share it. I was really up in my "First They Came" feels that day (Halloween)

As a Black person living in "my America", I am outraged about this video! Why do others promote the idea that Black people are thieves? These young were helping their sister move belongings from her burning house! It's shameful how evil people can be! There is a day of accountability coming!
