It takes a moment, but soon there’s a kiss pressed to his temple and Kaminari wanders back to his work. Shinso distracts himself by listening to the banter between crewmates, trying not to wander back to thoughts of a fairy trapped in the captain’s clutches.

“Don’t worry about him,” Sero loudly exclaims as he’s stirring a large pot. “He’s impatient and shit at telling a joke, but he’s a loyal person. Best captain a pirate could ask for.”

Shinso sighs, weighing his options. “I’m worried about the captain,” he settles on, an inconspicuous middleground.

Despite Sero’s warning glare, Kaminari abandons his duty to sit next to his lover. A cheek is nuzzled affectionately, sing-song voice imploring,” Talk to me, beautiful.”

“What’s wrong, my amethyst? As cute as you look pouting, I rather see you smile.”

“I’m not pouting,” he grouses.

After taking a seat, Shinso broods. Unease has wedged itself between his ribs, a painful feeling that stabs at his conscience.

Sero rolls his eyes, bumping an elbow into his friend’s side. “Less flirting, more stirring. Captain will have our heads if we fuck up the soup.”

Silence falls around the two, a thick tension weighing down their shoulders. Shinso concedes, stepping away to check in on the galley. Bootsteps announce his entry, the two cooks greeting him with oblivious smiles.

A switch is flipped, hellfire ignited in the belly of a beast. A snarl curls the pirate captain’s lips, teeth snapping as he spits,” What the fuck would you know? He stays with me. Question my orders again and I’ll throw you overboard for mutiny.”

The Gallows was not a place either of them wanted to find themselves. Bakugo will not put himself there willingly.

“S’not right. He doesn’t belong here with us and ya know it.”

“We don’t have time to stop,” Bakugo cuts him off sharply. “The crown’s bitches are hot on our trail, the chase is still on. Stoppin’ for anythin’ aside from supplies will be a death wish.”

“Sleepin’ like a babe,” he drawls,” nothing to get puffed up about.”

A heavy stare rolls over his face, scrutinizing him. Shinso hesitates to speak, but eventually says,” We’re heading towards Rainbow Cross… it’ll take us right to—”

He trusts his first mate with his life, a forged bond made out of a blood oath and the will to survive. The scar splitting Shinso’s bottom lip is a testament to the struggle they face making allies in a world filled with enemies.

Shinso forfeits his place at the helm, nodding in respect. Bakugo takes his time to answer, checking the compass to ensure their direction is set right.

“Everything peachy, Captain?”

Fresh sea salted air fills his lungs, the sweltering sun making him sweat. The ship has navigated out into the shimmering ocean with ease, a vast blue as far as the eye can see. Their path will take them through dangerous waters, skirting the stormlands of the East to avoid the crown’s naval fleet.

Once the fairy has fallen into a deep sleep, afterglow pulling him into the depths of slumberland, Bakugo tucks his little mate into a basket of fluffed pillows and cotton blankets. He spares one last kiss upon a tiny head of red hair before departing back up to the deck.
