thanks to @elbarto.bsky.social's reading group i now understand that all my enemies, though they do not say it, are motivated by a perpetual irrational fear of castration.

That is why the fundamental problem of political philosophy is still precisely the one that Spinoza saw so clearly, and that Wilhelm Reich rediscovered: "Why do men fight for their servitude as stubbornly as though it were their salvation?" How can people possibly reach the point of shouting: "More taxes! Less bread!"? As Reich remarks, the astonishing thing is not that some people steal or that others occasional-ly go out on strike, but rather that all those who are starving do not steal as a regular practice, and all those who are exploited are not continually out on strike: after centuries of exploitation, why do people still tolerate being humiliated and enslaved, to such a point, indeed, that they actually want humiliation and slavery not only for others but for themselves?

Reich is at his profoundest as a thinker when he refuses to accept ignorance or illusion on the part of the masses as an explanation of fascism, and demands an explanation that will take their desires into account, an explanation formulated in terms of desire: no, the masses were not innocent dupes; at a certain point, under a certain set of conditions, they wanted fascism, and it is this perversion of the desire of the masses that needs to be accounted for

ICE bad and also, around half of people killed by police have a disability. Their final moments are usually spent in frantic terror trying to "comply" with commands before cops shoot. Not opening a door or answering a question fast enough in this country can be a death sentence.

iirc Strauss would have been a major influence on the Annales school so that makes sense.

He comes up so regularly in other stuff I read that I figured I really should just go through some his work.

I read his first book a couple of years ago for kicks and it's not only bullshit, but it's also boring and poorly written. I know we're spoiled by having unlimited erowid trip reports to read, but I can't imagine how that book became culturally important

In Sorcery's Shadow: A Memoir of Apprenticeship Among the Songhay of Niger

In Sorcery's Shadow: A Memoir of Apprenticeship Among the Songhay of Niger by Cheryl Olkes and Paul Stoller

Totally wild text. An anthropologist gets inducted into sorcery and discovers magic is sort of real (he's conscious of the obvious comparison to Carlos Castaneda and wants to stress that, unlike Don Juan, his subject's are real). Very fun and filled with some absolutely bizarre anecdotes.

Two Essays on Analytical Psychology by C. G. Jung

I probably thought "come on, man" twice as much as I found something that felt really valuable, but this was an extremely good primer on Jung's whole thing which was exactly what I was looking for.

I am often triggered by what I see and/or what I hear, and this part of the condition is called echolalia. For example, when the chair of BAFTA started speaking on Sunday, I shouted, "Boring." On Sunday, Alan Cumming joked about his own sexuality and, when referencing
Paddington Bear, said, "Maybe you would like to come home with me, Paddington.
It wouldn't be the first time I have taken a hairy Peruvian bear home with me." This resulted in homophobic tics from me and led to a shout of "pedophile" that was likely triggered because Paddington Bear is a children's character.

I would appreciate reports of the event explaining that I ticked perhaps 10 different offensive words on the night of the awards. The N-word was one of these, and I completely understand its
significance in history and in the modern world, but most articles are giving the impression I shouted one single slur on
Sunday.

StudioCanal were working closely with
BAFTA, and BAFTA had made us all aware that any swearing would be edited out of the broadcast. I have made four documentaries with the BBC in the past, and feel that they should have been aware of what to expect from Tourette's and worked harder to prevent anything that I said - which, after all, was some 40 rows back from the stage - from being included in the broadcast.

As I reflect on the auditorium, I remember there was a microphone just in front of me, and with hindsight I have to question whether this was wise, so close to where I was seated, knowing I would tic.

okay what the fuck was the BBC doing with that broadcast? because at this point it could be mistaken for intentional… variety.com/2026/film/aw...

I will sleep soundly knowing this is going to be a haunting memory, a wraith of a regret wherein they endlessly imagine all of the things they could done to stand up to our bafoonish, pedophile president, a specter that never leaves these pathetic people for the rest of their miserable lives.
