EU vs the US:
When people compare the U.S. Hep B birth dose to Europe, they assume the systems are interchangeable. They simply aren't.
Europe has:
* universal prenatal screening
* months of paid maternity/paternity leave
* infants who aren't in daycare at 6 weeks
* universal healthcare that reduces missed diagnoses
* lower rates of perinatal transmission risk factors
* far more equitable access to care
The U.S. does not have these protections.
A vaccine schedule can't be separated from the society it exists in.
So the birth dose isn't about "Europe vs the
U.S."; it's about compensating for structural gaps that put American infants at higher risk.

1st human known to be infected with H5N5 strain of bird flu dies, Washington state officials say
The first human to have ever been infected with H5N5 strain of bird flu has died, Washington state health officials confirmed late Friday.
Very sad. Apparently the patient was someone with comorbidities that placed them at higher risk of a bad outcome. At a time when the threat of new pandemic is higher that ever we need our public health and surveillance systems strengthened not dismantled.

Farmers Face Prospect of Skyrocketing Healthcare Premiums
More than a quarter of U.S. farmers rely on the Affordable Care Act, but despite the government shutdown, tax credits are set to expire.
Farmers are being hurt from all sides—skyrocketing health care premiums, rising input costs, and extreme weather – all at once.
We need to work to address one of these problems by extending the health care tax credits so thousands of family farms don’t suffer.

Washington resident dies of complications from bird flu strain never before reported in humans | CNN
A Washington resident died of complications from an infection with a bird flu strain never before reported in humans, the state Department of Health said on Friday.
Fortunately no mammalian adaptations of concern for human to human spread, but a good reminder of the potential for morbidity and mortality from H5. Don’t let the N5 fool you. While slightly different this comes from the same H5 we’ve been dealing with since 2022. www.cnn.com/2025/11/21/h...

The Resurgence of Vaccine Preventable Diseases at Home and Abroad
Measles, whooping cough, and other vaccine-preventable diseases are on the rise around the world, and cuts to foreign aid, coupled with growing vaccine hesitancy, and persistent gaps in vaccine acces…
It seems appropriate that as someone who managed to survive a vaccine-less childhood this is my first post here.
What did you do for you 18th birthday? For me? I got my MMR and I’ll never stop appreciating the privilege of vaccination and the protection it provides.
