I didn't play it yet, since I am not really a fan of kung fu and martial art movies, but I deeply respect how it sticks to that classic aesthetic. It's definitely a gem for fans of that kind of movies and era!

I agree in general.
In very broad strokes:

If you wanna be complex: own it. Cut the crap with the broad appeal then. Can't have it both ways.

If you want broader appeal: look at Smash, Gang Beasts,etc. Traditional fighters too, but lean hard on game feel for all.

Either way: IT'S NICHE AF!

I often wonder if fighting game devs have friends that play casually or remember when they were casual players.

The difference in what drives casuals into fighters is LIGHTYEARS away from FGC folks. In most cases is the intro of Smash 64, as I've said before: Make my cool toys bash each other.

They each have 6 attacks you do with the corresponding special: launch (first attack when they are attached), tap, and two held attacks depending on your upgrade path (each upgrades separately).
Your passives allow you to cancel from one to another, but you can also use assists to help you set up!
