A Nationwide Book Ban Bill Has Been Introduced in the House of Representatives Hours after the State of the Union address, House republicans introduced legislation banning LGBTQ+ books from public schools nationwide.

A nationwide book ban bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives. Here's what you need to know about HR7661, including who is behind it, the history behind such bills, and what you need to do to stop it.

I mean, I did love Jesus’ Son, which is unrelentingly bleak and violent. But it felt oversized in Train Dreams. Glad there was more complexity in the film.

I truly disliked that book when I read it, and the film did improve upon the text on may levels. (There was a fair amount of SA and bestiality mentioned in the book that I appreciated was not present in the film.)

I just can't seem to find the same content--authors also reviewing books--on the other accounts. So Goodreads, as much as I might want to fully divest, still holds utility but also delight for me. Whose reviews do you follow? What account tips and tricks am I missing?

She is so smart and astute. @kjcharleswriter.com, like Alexis Hall, somehow manages to write, read, and review prolifically, and we are all the richer for it. I also cannot forget @roxanegay.bsky.social who is also a wonderful book reviewer who is also so thoughtful and generous in her book reviews.

One of my favorite book reviewers is Alexis Hall. His reviews are so detailed, thoughtful, funny, and generous. He asks that they not be quoted anywhere, but seriously I wish he would publish a book of his reviews ala Nick Hornby's Believer column. Next is @kjcharleswriter.com Her reviews are witty

I am loving PageBound and see why others love StoryGraph (still doesn't display accounts with a lot of books read in an easy to browse way for my purposes), but I remain on Goodreads for a number of reasons. A major reason being some of the prolific reviews by authors themselves.

Lara Elena Donnelly - No Such Thing As Duty (Neon Helmock)

W Somerset Maugham as intelligence agent + vampire story. It gets in a way a lot of modern vampire fiction doesn't why vampires are both sexy and scary and how the two are linked. Does exactly what it intends in perfect novella length form.

& Threads
Let us not forget, it was the same administration that reduced us to wearing trash bags as protective gear while we watched the hospital go up in flames around us during the pandemic that just murdered one of our own on the streets in broad daylight. As a nurse & as a person, I will never forgive. I will never forget. I will never back down. This was never about border control.
This is about total control.

It's our last episode! We're so grateful to everyone who's listened to us for the past 7 years.

We're using this occasion to talk about the state of science fiction and fantasy in the 21st century β€” and what has shaped the stories we've loved.

Little Blue Encyclopedia (for Vivian) β€” Hazel Jane Plante

If you like post-modern lit, do I have a recommendation for you!

LITTLE BLUE ENCYCLOPEDIA (FOR VIVIAN) is a work of genius. Hazel Jane Plante creates a world, a world within it, and vivid characters in both. It's one of the best things I've read in years.

The paradox of reading (and writing) is that you go away from the world in order to come back to it closer than you were before. (It’s the same way that returning from a trip temporarily makes home more visible.) All good books provide this experience in some measure. Probably most good art.

I agree that we should frame reading as a pleasure and that reading is not necessarily a virtue. But why do we persist in allowing the framing that learning and expanding your thinking or even defending democracy can’t also be pleasurable and joyful?

I said it before, will say it again -- generative AI fetishizes "ideas" while sneering at effort, execution, and education. That, despite Gen-AI being built on and out of other people's effort, execution and education.
