Will make a full ref for the moth later I haven't been in a great state the past 2 days and I'm focusing on finishing a comm atm
ento taxonomy is crying over your microscope because you have 10 unpublished manuscripts describing new species of dust mite that no one will ever give a fuck about. meanwhile ornithologists have been arguing about the same beloved warblers for decades
13.02.2026 03:05 β π 9 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Digital artwork of a dragon head caterpillar (Polyura schreiber) with the many dots on its horned head and chubby body rendered to resemble little stars, a few actually being tiny four-pointed stars. Above its head a partially eclipsed moon is framed between its inner horns, and large four-pointed stars rest on the center of its upper head and hang on either side of its head between its outer horns. More stylized rays and stars radiate out into the edges of the image, rich textured gold against a dark blue framing the green bug's body. The caterpillar is outlined in metallic gold and has fairly realistic face details and feet. Art by Moth Monarch.

Rant(?): I hate it when people only care about non human animals if the animal is "useful" to humans/ when people are unable to appreciate animals beyond what humans might use them for.
I just find it sad that we share a planet with so many interesting species and yet some people don't care unless-
Something big might be happening for me this fall, will update when I find out π¦

It's a Linne's Cicada, originally for #invertober2024.
I fell off the Invertober train in 2024 when it got near the end. Started on this Linne's Cicada and could not finish the colour! So while I'm in a rut, decided to pick this one back up again to complete it.

Extracted text: "In a recent study, 3-trans-caffeoyl-muco-quinic acid was found to be the substance that compelled spicebush swallowtails to lay their eggs on members of Lauraceae. However, 3-trans-caffeoyl-muco-quinic acid is a component of the extract from sassafras plants but not from spicebush, redbay or camphor tree, the other top three host plants of spicebush swallowtails. This substance is not-". The excerpt is cut off from there.
According to wikipedia, the chemical compound 3-trans-caffeoyl-muco-quinic acid is important in the lifecyles of spicebush swallowtails like my bugsona.
This is a subtle reference to the fact that I am trans
Also wanna correct this ID to Arachnis dilecta!! The type locality was Teotihuacan, iNat suggests A. picta as the species but the locality doesnβt have any adults of that species seen. Instead itβs all A. dilecta, so my guess is this caterpillar actually belongs to that species
