Christiana Doucette
Sometimes,
Fingertips only find fragments,
Broken clam shell words,
Dark half-sentence mussels
Crusted with barnacles And adjectives.
But sometimes,
Before concerns pick the mind clean, Or the crosscurrent of routine catches and riptide responsibilities Wash out wit on waves of doubtβ€”
Search the blank shore
For well-worded whelks, and moon shell metaphors
Sift free the shark teeth verbs camouflaged
In gerund and infinitive shards.
And,
When toes trip on shell tips
That don't give when pressed,
Drill down.
Fall to hands and knees and dig.
Let grit grind beneath the fingernails And sting the eyes.
Embrace the wind shivering up your spine.
Ignore the surge licking your feet,
Pulling you back
The shell
Is worth the trouble.

Brush back the sand, And bits of other shells
Left by dark and stormy nights,
The broken story arcs and character clichΓ©s
Shrouding this story's shape.
Sentence sediment
Swirls loose between your hands
As you scoop,
But don't lose focus.
Keep hold of the shell.
Lift it free.
Wade back into the waves.
Check the structure for holes, Rinse the debris free,
Brush grey away
Til flashes of orange-red
Glow
Like a rising sun.

But in finding it, I remembered this one that @jaimedilleditor.bsky.social published in 2021

Been two months since I remembered this app exists. Oops

Novel descriptions are all like "Stephen King meets Virginia Woolf" or "Charlotte Bronte meets Vin Diesel" and I'm like that sounds terrible and also what are they meeting about.

Such a great read!

it’s my belief that every poetry book should have a secret title that helps you understand what it is trying to do and it is also my belief this title should always be β€œnothing but bangers”

10) if your copy editor keeps correcting the million ways you've misspelled your own names, like I keep messing up "glossary," maybe you need one. And maybe I need to put on my glasses and go work instead of rambling. But you know, it's a Thursday with Monday vibes.

29.08.2024 13:16 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

7) if every name starts with a vowel, probably need a glossary

8) if you invented the names by changing letters for common items, like Koilet Powl, you need a glossary

9) if your world is the exact opposite of a single stoplight town, glossary

29.08.2024 13:13 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

5) if your beta readers give everyone nicknames, they can't pronounce shit and you need a glossary

6) if you used a glossary to keep everything straight while drafting, then duh, you need a glossary

29.08.2024 13:10 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

3) if you have 2 or more characters with names that start with the same letter, you need a glossary

4) if you have 2 or more characters with names that have identical syllables, forget the glossary, you need a new name

29.08.2024 13:08 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

A lot of my authors are fantasy writers, so I get asked quite often, "Do I need a glossary?"

Here's my quick and dirty guide-

1) if you had to Google it, use a glossay

2) if it sounds like Middle Earth had a baby with any other language on the planet, you need a glossary

29.08.2024 13:06 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm usually always the former, but I'm stuck in the latter right now, and I don't like it here lol

I love the aesthetic of a rainbow bookshelf, but I need the organization of alphabetical order, and I'm sad I can't have both 😭

This is some of the best writing advice I've ever read.

Aside: I use tarot to keep my mind attuned to playful connections between images with rich history. Each card has multiple meanings, and the cards speak to each other differently every day.

06.10.2023 14:33 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

AH! I love that! Everything is connected, and I love how tarot creates a moment where I pause long enough to think on that instead of constantly overlooking the details that make up existence.

I hear time #chanting,
but it sounds like the
carton of milk left
spoiling in the fridge,
overriding my hunger
with the loudness of
its finite stench.
