#156 Immigrants, tax and bullying in the USA - Tax Justice Network podcasts Μonthly podcast show sizzling with the latest developments in the corrupt world of tax havens, financial secrecy and tax dodging.

On the @taxjustice.net podcast the #Taxcast, I spoke to @4taxfairness.bsky.social on how undocumented immigrants in the US are paying a higher effective tax rate than 55 mega-corporations & several billionaires. And how unwise the US is to be persecuting them the way they are

@nixonsimon.bsky.social lays out in a few sentences why Europe has been so tame in the trade war.

Generous reading is that Europeans worried too much for Ukraine.

Ungenerous reading is EU politicians were weak.

Trade in services between πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί & πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ is largely neglected in current trade talksβ€”despite matching goods trade in scale. From 2014–2024, the US ran a consistent services surplus, partially compensating its goods deficit. Ignoring this weakens the EU's negotiating position, warns a new Kiel Policy Brief πŸ‘‡

1/ How do MNEs shift profits to tax havens & who’s doing most of it?

Using #German administrative data, authors show:

πŸ”Ή Profit shifting rises sharply with firm size
πŸ”Ή €19bn shifted in 2022 alone
πŸ”Ή 95% of that by firms covered by the Global Minimum Tax

When university education is free, students treat it as something with zero value. When cash is on the line - especially their own, not Mom & Dad’s - they squeeze every drop from it. Fees provide more than just much-needed revenue, they provide motivation.

πŸš€ More patents = more jobs β€” but only when innovation is diverse & connected.

Our new RETHINK-GSC study shows: doubling patenting boosts jobs by 6%, but over-concentration in a few fields slows growth.

πŸ‘‰Smart, inclusive R&D policy is key.

🚨 Only 10% of EU patents involve universities. Why?

A new study of 2,900 HEIs finds third-party funding boosts both quantity & quality of patents β€” especially in wealthier regions. Regional policy matters!

It took 13 years to agree a global minimum tax β€” and now the U.S. wants to gut it for its own multinationals. @jayatighosh.bsky.social calls it what it is: a rollback of even the watered-down compromise.

To reveal the underlying values, just look at the bill. Both Senate and House bills have large, expensive tax breaks for the foreign income of US MNCs, even as the Administration supposedly rails against offshoring, as @whitehouse.senate.gov points out in a new oped.

#Resilientsupplychains comes from managing riskβ€”not isolation.

OECD modelling shows that relocalising supply chains could cut trade by 18%, reduce GDP by 5%, and fail to improve stability.

Sloppy headline. Of course, they were down in April -- because they were WAY up in March ahead of the (potential?) tariffs. It even goes on to say "However when compared with April 2024, goods exports were still up by €2.5 billion." Sorry to spoil your story with your OWN story.
