you haven't seen Rahxephon I'm guessing, because if you had you'd know what the difference is

yes, and the writer who doesn't read will only produce worthless slop indistinguishable from chatgpt

Reading Earthlings, but it's a real challenge because the entire thing is written like this. I'm guessing this one was translated VERY literally.

good point

I'd split prevailing mecha trends into two sorts, if anything: where the mecha is a tool of war and utilitarian (most Gundam), and where the mecha is a representation of god or some great supernatural power intent on remaking humanity (RahXephon, G-Witch).

Finally you have something like Eighty-Six, which is even LESS interested in the mecha as unique and special. All of them are utilitarian and equally mediocre. The real battle is, hilariously, psychic powers.

'interest in writing' does not mean anything and isn't worth anything. the writer who doesn't read cannot answer the question 'so why should I read your work when you yourself don't read?'

10.03.2026 10:50 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

yeah the Ultra's host does not pilot him at all

10.03.2026 10:44 — 👍 4    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Akito the Exiled, having an actual pilot as a protagonist, has the titular Akito pilot a dork ass mass-produced unit that is identical to the units used by the rest of his team. The Alexanders are incredibly utilitarian and, honestly, not even that good.

Re: the protagonist's special mecha, take Code Geass--Lelouch goes from KMF to KMF and, this is important, is an intensely godawful pilot. He's only good at the Shinkirou because it is a defensive unit. Bro can't maneuver for shit. CG, despite being a mecha anime, isn't that interested in piloting.

10.03.2026 10:43 — 👍 14    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

yeah and the writing produced will be worthless slop

10.03.2026 10:41 — 👍 2    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

sure

However the host really doesn't have the agency that e.g. a Kamen Rider has. The Ultra still operates according to Planet of Light stuff, though they can take on human concerns. Ultimately after the Ultra leaves though, the host just returns to being a normal person.

like even Code Geass is more Gundam than it is anything, in substance/inspiration; very much not a 'the mecha is a character and it tells a superhero story'

The Ultra/Gridman line of toku is somewhat interesting: the alien super-entity bonds with a human host in order to manifest in the human world, and the host doesn't actually pilot them in any way though their personality can influence the Ultra (who usually picks nice people to be their host).

I mean holding forth about mecha w/o having seen Gundam seems a touch silly

Mildly annoyed by people thinking Gridman is mecha because he looks sort of robot-y. I don't recall what sort of entity he is exactly, but I'm pretty sure he's kind of Ultraman-adjacent?

I mean super robots are a vanishing minority these days and I don't think this person knows what they're talking about

I guess 'the mecha is a sort of superhero' works if you think Ultraman or Gridman is a mecha (they are not).

Right, if you're hungry for nuns (nungry) and are waiting for a preorder link to your favourite store, most are now live (still waiting for B&N):

📚 books2read.com/u/bxLRDq

And also on itch, of course:

Also, the links are on my website:

in ones where the mecha is 'a character', such as RahXephon or let's say Eva, the story could not possibly be further from 'superhero' lol. perhaps the only thing that might resemble this idea is, like, super sentai

10.03.2026 09:34 — 👍 16    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

yeah I've watched quite a few and 'the mecha is a superhero' resembles nothing I've ever seen or heard of. the very point of mecha anime is that the pilots can barely do shit when not in the cockpit, they're nothing without their apparatuses of war

"Anti-intellectualism is antifascist actually" is sure one hell of a take.

And it's really weird to have to say that but I think a lot of people who have more stability in other areas of their lives look at the trans accounts with a few tens of thousands of followers and think: wow that would be cool. Imagine the power of being heard.

No! That's a fucking nightmare!

It isn't actually a privillege to have to try and scrape by on the instable proceeds generated through your patreon, gofundme, onlyfans or itch because you have been excluded from the formal economy.

That is something that you have to do because the alternative is to fucking starve.

Just reposted this thread but to expand:

I think people confuse social capital with actual... capital.

Like a lot of people get VERY angry that so many trans women have large followings here and on other sites but:

1) They are not the largest accounts.

2) They are still mostly poor as fuck.
