For example, this is probably not appropriate for like, 10-12 year olds not just because of the subject matter, but because the film doesn't really try to make sure 10-12 year olds could understand the suicide pact and why it was a reaction to the dystopia these characters inhabit.

'the pacing, language, and themes are clearly meant to be intelligible to [age]' is IMO one of the better ways to determine what the piece of media's target demographic is.
