- yet another had acted for the University of Hong Kong in relation to its removal of a statue commemorating the Tiananmen massacre, and only stopped representing HKU on this when US politicians started making noises with the firm’s US HQ.

- another had a partner who publicly spoke favourably of Hong Kong’s National Security Law and was going to speak at an event run by the Hong Kong government on the topic before pulling out due at least in part to publicity surrounding it; and

- one big US commercial law firm literally has a partner who is a member of China’s rubber stamp legislature (National People’s Congress);

The fact that Americans seem surprised and disappointed with how big US commercial law firms have caved in the face of Trumpist authoritarianism shows how little Americans have noticed how their corporate and legal titans have behaved overseas. Examples from Hong Kong include the following:

PS: It’s clear from the reactions from Chinese and Hong Kong authorities that they are surprised by the strength of the Australian reaction, after they were given a free pass by the UK when it was happening to Carmen and Tony.

back in February? If there was more noise at the time from UK’s media and government, not only would it reassure Carmen and Tony that the UK cares about their plight and would protect them, but it could also have deterred the threat-makers from trying their luck in another country.
