Is the ocean ‘having a moment’? This was the UN summit where the world woke up to the decline of the seas A slew of global leaders met in the south of France to discuss the future of the oceans. There was ‘momentum’ and ‘enthusiasm’, but there were critical voices too

To achieve #30x30 governments need to first protect those who depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. Implementation has to centre equity with small scale fishers for marine protection to be fair and effective. @riseup4theocean.bsky.social #UNOC3

Evidence of deep-sea mining still visible over four decades later | Natural History Museum The impact it has had on the life living down there has been more mixed.

There is something horribly sobering about this.

The deep sea abyssal plains of the Pacific have existed basically unchanged for roughly 80 million years. Over a period of just a couple of weeks in 1979, we changed it during an experimental mining operation.

Sweden sets an example for EU countries with first steps to ban bottom trawling in marine protected areas Swedish government proposal to amend legislation, paving the way for a future ban on bottom trawling in Swedish marine protected areas.

Bottom trawling, dragging a heavy net across the seafloor, has been compared to burning down a forest to catch rabbits.

Sweden starting to ban this in sensitive habitats is my #EarthOptimism #OceanOptimism for today.
