Why cutting climate journalism is a risk we can’t afford A recent wave of lay-offs will reduceΒ public understanding of how climate change impacts lives and weaken the media's ability to hold power to account, enabling climate misinformation to spread

Loved this line by Felix Horne:

β€œWithout expertise and experience, wildfires are reported without the underlying climate context that fuels them. Energy stories lose their climate dimension. Pollution is treated as an unfortunate accident rather than a foreseeable harm from fossil fuel dependence.”

The polar vortex that hit the U.S. & claimed 60 lives is reminiscent, for me, of the 2021 heat dome that killed 600 British Colombians.

Polar opposites on the weather spectrum, but both telling examples of how even North American society is unprepared for climate change-driven temperature extremes.

A warm spell late this January has brought remarkably-different temperatures & snowpack to lower elevations around Revelstoke than what I experienced here in January 2025. Not to worry, though - fresh snow continues to fall even as the degrees crank up above freezing this winter! β˜ƒοΈ

Possibly one of the most random stories I’ve ever written.

Someone smashed open our newspaper’s cash box… with a coconut!

But for a few dollars they stole, as I wrote, the coconut-cocked thief may have actually spent more just to buy the drupe fruit itself πŸ₯₯

Thanks Richard. It’s an ongoing story & part of the reason it remains noteworthy is critics are concerned that the ship still hasn’t been removed after nearly a year (& won’t be until at least spring). The coast guard’s latest updates also indicate they’re finding increased debris & oil slicks.

A letter from Jimmy Thomson on impact As editor-in-chief, I believe you have a right to know how we’ve spent your dollars. But how to quantify impact when so much of what we do happens inside the minds of the people we reach?

It has been so gratifying to work with the incredible staff at @nationalobserver.com as EIC this year. I published this letter to our readers and supporters to document some of the impact we had this year and plans for 2026.
