It was a response by progressive organizations in Southern Mindanao to the national call for launching protests against rising oil prices.

Welgang Bayan happened as a general, coordinated multisectoral mobilization to shake the economic and political foundation of the fascist state. Primarily, an anti-dictatorship movement, one of the first successful public strikes was launched in Davao City on October 22-24, 1984.

While seeing all of this, I am reminded of the history of militancy in my city that fought a dictator that also declared martial law. The first Welgang Bayan (People's Strike) in the country happened in Davao City in 1984.

Martial law was declared in South Korea and then ended six hours after. After that deliberate attempt to prevent an impeachment of SK President Yoon Suk Yoon, an indefinite general strike was called by the KCTU, SK's largest labor union, to demand the immediate resignation of SK's president.

Where do correct ideas come from? They come from social practice: struggle for production, class struggle and scientific experiment. This all demonstrates theory without practice is harmful. It numbs us of our role in arousing, organizing and mobilizing.
