Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧡

I also have advice. Everybody loves reading advice on the computer, so I'll share it: the best thing you can do right now is log off as hard as you can. Go outside, talk to people in real life where it's actually kind of rude to talk about the news, try to actually see the friends you usually just text message. Go for a long drive and turn the phone off while you do it. Get back into your hobbies or pick one and learn it for a while. Watch one of those studio movies that reviews called "wildly miscalculated" and you haven't seen since high school. Play an album you like but find embarrassing. Go to free community events even if they sound stupid. If you take the freeway, try the surface streets. Go to a bad diner and just order some bad coffee because even bad coffee is good coffee.
You can't help anybody when you're exhausted and keep posting one million college-educated rewordings of "I would love to be dead right now" on the computer. Walk away from the thing and try out some of those normal things you hear about and if you get bored that's wonderful because we're not supposed to get bored anymore. It turns out boredom is the Cadillac of feelings.

Exploitation of resources was built into the American system decades, even centuries, before any of us could have prevented them. society made this choice for us. The siren song of nihilism can feel so irresistible at this moment. If there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and capitalism is what shaped the society we were born into, then there’s nothing any of us can do, right? Wrong. Also, fuck you.

Last sentence might have been directed at a certain person I interacted with who, turns out, isn’t a nihilist. They’re just a coward.

It’s notable that significant research was conducted over the last 5+ years on how to structure technology affordances to help people make sense of information and improve their literacy, much of it funded by tech companies, who’ve now gone out of their way to throw it out and do the exact opposite

When you are feeling weary or despairing, remember that there are people in every corner of the world taking life affirming action in the direction of more justice. The fact that you can't see it all is a comfort because it means there is an excess of positive actions happening all at once. #onwards

one of the reasons to ban airbnb rather than try to regulate it is that they respond with millions of dollars of campaign spending against anyone who proposes regulating them.

Worth noting that this is also what the UK government review found, it just ignored all the evidence in its conclusions.

"Scientific insiders." You mean...scientists? The people who do science and understand it? I'm not saying they're beyond suspicion, but when I look at the US over the past 20 years, I do not have the impression that our major problem is that _scientists_ have too much power.

BirdCast’s three day forecast showing moderate to high bird migration across much of the central and eastern parts of the states, plus’s along the west coast over the next three nights.

Several nights of higher migration are queuing up, starting tonight. Tell friends, family, coworkers, etc about this amazing phenomenon and how they can help these birds with a simple flip of a switch!

i do not think the mainstream press is equipped or capable of covering ideological white nationalists and eugenicists as such, or even capable of noting that this is what they are. it is related to the wide belief that racism is simply a matter of manners.

This is one of the closest Nazi parallels the Trump White House has yet announced. I know because I actually saw a recreation of the original 1937 Nazi β€œEntartete Kunst” (Degenerate Art) exhibit at the Smithsonian in 1991. They assembled 200 of the original 650 works. It was a sight to behold.
